For now, indeed.

AR could will definitely prove super beneficial for driving. It's no real stretch of the imagination to see where Vision Pro could be a precursor to something like Windshield Pro (goofy name intended to illustrated the obvious use-case) on an Apple EV. ;)

I know the internet is melting from the vOne announcement. But if you push the Apple marketing speak aside, it's a fascinating vision about where personal computing is headed. Laptops? Pfft. Feels like their most ambitious endeavor to date. I'm all for it.

Windshield Pro is one of the many names they will call it to catch leakers, apparently. What happened to xrOS and Reality Pro and all that? Everyone who reported one of those names as a tip is having their house raided right now.

But yeah they did a great job of presenting it as a new computing platform and I want one so bad.

The Vision Pro headset that Apple announced today will have a unique biometric authentication method, employing iris scanning for the first time. Optic ID uses cameras in the headset to scan the eye, much like Face ID scans the face.

optic-id.jpg

It is, in fact, almost identical to Face ID, but it uses the unique layout of a person's iris to verify identity.

Optic ID can be used to unlock the headset, authorize purchases, and unlock passwords, much like Face ID and Touch ID. Optic ID data is encrypted, stays on device, and is stored in the Secture Enclave processor so it can never be accessed by Apple or third-party developers.

The headset has numerous privacy features in addition to Optic ID. There is a visual indicator when the on-device camera is being used to record 3D video, and all eye input is isolated so apps and websites aren't able to determine where you're looking. Camera data is processed at the system level, so apps also aren't able to see your surroundings from the multitude of cameras.

Honestly ... I think Apple FINALLY designed a product that the elite-boasting Apple Fan CANNOT simply show off to EVERYONE in public that got the latest, greatest newest Apple product!

They finally did it!!

Going by previous new product launches you would be wise to avoid any Apple gen 1 devices. I do fully intend to try this bad boy out in the Apple Store tho.

Going to be some seriously traumatised kids when daddy puts the headset on to capture heartwarming moments in 3D, LOL. Or…. Kids throw you a banana because you look like a minion. Pmsl

Ha! That IS what they will use for IDing leakers. Uh oh. I better cease using. 😂

Personally, I like the concept a lot. Love the ambition. I can't recall anything this ambitious from Apple. WHeil I can't buy one, I'm all for the concept and it's evolution.

I feel like for its time, the iPhone was even more ambitious and even more of a new platform. As soon as they make one I can afford I will be supporting them in their endeavour.

I thought I saw that there were some kind of accessory replacement lenses. I assume prescription replacements. I could be wrong.
Yes, special Zeiss lenses for the device with your prescription, no normal glasses. I would think contacts would work. Also the Vision Pro will require custom fitting for frame that fits your face. We buy shoes that fit our feet!

I have a little white scar on my iris and it takes a little part of my pupil caused by an infection. Will be a problem with opticID? Don’t sure how this scanners work

I think Samsung Galaxies had the retina scan before. Not sure what accuracy it has though.

Carl Zeiss lenses for prescription? I don't think they're in that business are they?

Says in the keynote unless I’m just completely misremembering the name. Custom lenses in your prescription that slot in between the headrest and the display.

iPhone was definitely a huge leap. This, to me, feels bigger.

Agree - as the platform matures, and that price drops, likely for a non "Pro" version, I'm happy to help move the concept further down the road. My 12 just washed the replay and is pretty energized. Looking at this through that lens as opposed to the lens of the many vocal detractors here, this concept is radical af. I'm in.

Yeah I really meant to say that it seems right up there with the iPhone in terms of risk and potential that people don’t see yet, even beyond what they made clear beyond peoples’ expectations today.

Cannot wait for that improved autocorrect. Fighting my phone to type this.

So..what happens if you fail optic ID? They didn't outline any multi-user features...so does it just show you a video feed of the world around you and the device is just locked?

One thing I feel they should have is a guest mode...if it is locked to one user how are users going to sell the idea to friends?

Fascinating, especially considering that the area of the iris changes as the pupil dilates and contracts. That makes it especially challenging.

No way it has any kind of cellular capabilities, 5G, 4G, SIM slot, e-SIM, or any of that when it has 2 hours of run time in the portable mode, running on the battery pack.

This is the first iteration of something very cutting edge that they've simultaneously tried to make portable and sleek at the same time.

It incorporates nearly every kind of sensor and chip from the entire range of Apple products and some blindingly bright displays inside.
I would guess that the amount of battery juice required to make all those cameras, audio scanners/tracers, image processing, eye tracking, the os and all the content itself, etc etc would dwarf the power requirements of a 5G modem… i.e having cellular support wouldn’t suddenly make it a 1hr long battery life product, could very well still be around 1hr55min.
