When I try to open the program I get a message that says it needs to install the flac binaries - I click ok then get this:

AppleScript Error
Is: /usr/local: No such file or directory (1)

and an OK button, which when I click it it takes me to the macflac program. If I move flac files into it and hit convert -- a window opens that says Decoding [first track] but it just sits there and the program freezes and I have to force quit.

Any help is appreciated.

The error you are seeing indicates that the installer cannot find the directory or file it is looking for since you are supposed to be installing binaries I will go with /usr/local/bin not being there. You can fix this by using mkdir /usr/local/bin in the Terminal.app then re-trying the installer again or if wanting to try another program you can use XLD to convert the FLAC to the various formats it supports that you can play in iTunes.
