If I share a hard drive via my home network, will I be able to stream movies from this hard drive to my 3rd gen Apple TV? Thanks

Do you have an iOS device around? Many iOS media players support UPnP -> Apple TV playback. It's a much more lightweight (no need to power on a comparatively power-hungry desktop) than iTunes Home Sharing.
