Hello,

I'm considering a purchase of the new AirPort Extreme in order to connect it my media hard drive.

If I share a hard drive via my home network, will I be able to stream movies from this hard drive to my 3rd gen Apple TV?

Thanks

Not directly. You stream from iTunes on a computer. iTunes can use the hard drive on your AE as its media location though.

Thanks, is there any way to stream movies to Apple TV not from iTunes ?

Do you have an iOS device around? Many iOS media players support UPnP -> Apple TV playback. It's a much more lightweight (no need to power on a comparatively power-hungry desktop) than iTunes Home Sharing.

See section 1.4 Streaming UPnP sources to the Apple TV at https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1503346/ , in my UPnP Bible, for more into.
