no not realy. but i heard thats its mega easy to user upgrade the hard drive if you wanted to do that😎

There could be an update but nobody seems to know. Apple stated that they are committed to the Apple TV even though its still a hobby.
Upgrading the hard drive in the current model is very simple. I have a 250Gb hard drive in mine, it also runs Boxee and XBMC.

Only up to 250GB, which is still paltry compared to the media libraries of some of the people here.

The only rumor I have heard was really related to a Mac Mini rumor. That rumor stated that the next Mac Mini may be shipping out packing the new/upcoming Ion platform.
Some of the speculation was that there was something lost in the transfer or translation of that rumor and they must have meant it was the Apple TV that would be getting the Ion platform.

Why isn't this function available through Apple TV but it is part of iTunes?

Probably because you can create a playlist of internet stations in iTunes then select one from within the Apple TV.

So, forgive my ignorance, my laptop (where the iTunes exists) will need to be "live" and awake for the stream to work with Apple TV, right?

Correct. And the playlist needs to be synched to the Apple TV also.
Here's what it would look like. I took a radio station from the iTunes default radio stations and added it to my playlist.
[ edit ] if you sync the playlist to the Apple TV your mac won't need to be live. It can be turned off as long as the playlist is on the Apple TV itself. And your Apple TV is connected to the interwebs of course 🙂

Apple TV Radio
If you work in Multiple Speaker mode you will get all the sound content inc the Radio stations playing thru Apple TV. This is one of the most brilliant thing - in the absence of decent content- that ATV does!!
