Hi,
I am thinking about buying an AppleTV in the summer for a 4K TV.

I am leaning towards the 4K as the HD version is way too high priced. What are the chances that the old ATV4K will see a decent discount, now that the new one has been released? I mean the new remote is nice but I don't need the new chip or the remote so would prefer just paying a bit less.

Thanks in advance!

Keep an eye on the refurb store. But not sure if I understand the part about the "HD version is way too high priced". I replaced my two Apple TV 3's with two Apple TV HD's (aka Apple TV 4) a year ago. I don't have a 4k TV and the cheapest Apple TV I could find was a refurb Apple TV HD. There aren't any in the refurb store right now, but when they are available, they are the cheapest.

Maybe you are talking about the new Apple TV though instead of the Apple TV HD?

It's very possible that retailers may discount the old ATV 4K to get them off shelves. I would look for that right around the time the new ones are about to arrive in those stores.

The Apple TV HD is less expensive, but still arguably too expensive for what it is. Is that what you mean?

It ain't gonna happen, but I'm wishing for another DirectTV promotion where they give me an Apple TV for signing up for their service for 3 months.
I remember that, but I had to look up when I did that DirectTV deal. November 2017. Wow! I doubt we’ll ever see a deal like that again.

I would imagine there will be people selling their current AppleTV 4k's after getting the new one.

Yes, that's what I meant. I should have clarified. I think it's kind of ridiculous that they are still selling the 2015 ATV for that price, even with the new remote included. That's why the 4K (last gen) seems like a better purchase for longevity and future-proofing. I don't mind the old remote either so it would be a good deal + the better processor than the ATVHD.

I will check third party retailers when the new one is released. I guess second hand is a possibility but the sellers I have seen usually price them very close to the full retail price so there's not much to be gained from that, at least from what I have seen.
