AppleWatch vs Android?

Is there any way to pair an AppleWatch to an Android phone? I wanna get my mum my AppleWatch Series 5 but she is the only one in the family with an Android phone (until I can find an used and reliable iPhone for her) and I don't know if the watch can be setup and paired with such a phone, any suggestion?
