Just got my first Mac yesterday (MBP) and am getting used to it. I have a question about installing applications. Of the 3rd party software I have installed thus far (firefox, skype, ibank) they all install fine. However, if I go into the applications folder, they have a generic icon until after I reboot. Is this normal behavior?

If you're referring to the Applications folder on your Dock, the generic icon appears until you've launched the application, at least. Sometimes until you reboot. To make it happen sooner, drag the App folder off your Dock and get a fresh copy by dragging the Applications folder from Finder to your Dock.
