application question

i see an application folder under Places when you open up finder and under Macintosh HD. Is there suppose to be one under Macintosh HD too?

Is it safe to delete one folder? Or is there suppose to be two application folder in those two location?

It's actually the same folder. Places is just like a shortcut to the actual location.
