Application to edit mp3 files?

Has to be freeware, I'm not doing anything fancy just need to grap a part of a song and save that part as a mp3.

Itunes allows you to set start and end times and you can then save it down as a new MP3

I tried this with iTunes on a 1.6Mb file. I wanted to strip off the first 7 seconds.
It worked fine but the new file is now 2.1MB.
