Application to slowdown/cool off fans? (unibody macbook)

Just like the title says. I have the late 2008 aluminum macbook and I've had trouble with it over heating and becoming really loud (fans) recently and I was wondering if there was an app or some other way to change this.

If it's overheating, why would you want to slow down the fans? If the fans are loud, they may be bad.
