Sometimes when quiting an application, like Entourage, the little black tab in the dock stays selected by the app I just closed, indicating that it's still open. I then use force quit command to close it again, then it disappears. Only using the force quit does it go away.

I find myself doing this more frequently lately. Any suggestions to this weird anomaly?

How do you close the app? Just pushing the red circle only closes the window but not the whole app.

Sorry, if you already knew this...;)

To expand on this...

click on the icon of the program you want to close. The menu bar at the top of the screen should have the App's name in it (usually right next to the lil' apple icon). Click on that and then click Quit. It's a little confusing coming from a Windows world but you get used to it and for some reason it feels nice.

Some apps do Quit when you close their window. Just depends I suppose. But for the most part it works as I described above.

I usually close my applications from the dock, just as I did in the Windows taskbar by right-clicking (control-clicking).

Occasionally, I have one hang up no matter how I quit it and just clicking on the icon in the dock finishes the process.

It would be safe to repair permissions, the unofficial panacea. ;)
