iPod Applications update counter won't "update"

For quite some time now iTunes has been telling me that I have at least 32 applications that require updating. However, when i check for updates, it says that all my apps are the current version. 😕

Any ideas on why the counter is showing 32 and won't go down?

Did you buy some apps from a different national iTunes Store?

maybe you have more than one itunes account licensed to the itunes library
and you are not signed into that account
