Applications won't open until restart - Snow Leopard

I've been having a problem with Snow Leopard since I installed it, and it's been bugging me like mad, but I haven't been able to find a solution or anyone with a similar case anywhere. Today, however, I tried again, and I ran across this news article, which perfectly described my problem:

Finally, twice in the past week now I have experienced a very old Mac OS X bug that I thought was gone for good: All of a sudden, when I try launching an application, the application’s Dock icon starts bouncing endlessly in the Dock and the application never fully launches. Instead, eventually (after a few minutes of endless bouncing), the bouncing stops, but the application icon stays there without the status light indicating that it’s open, and right-clicking on it results in an “Application not responding” message. You can force-quit and try again, but it won’t work any better the second time.

And once this starts happening, if you want to get anything accomplished with your Mac, you really have no choice but to restart the entire machine.

Has anyone experienced anything similar and/or knows how to fix it? It really inhibits me from doing almost anything with my Mac when I can't open any applications.



/edit: To add some context, this only happens after my laptop has been running for a while and seems to affect some applications but not others (maybe those that have already run since restart are fine?). I still have over 1.2gb of free RAM while I try it, so I don't think it's a memory issue either.
 
Have you tried running Disk Utility to repair permissions? It could be the app is trying to access a part of your drive that the OS has decided it isn't allowed.

You can also try running Console and call up your logs to get clues to the problem.

Trying that now. Forgot to mention that the harddrive is new too, and that could definitely play some role in it.

I'll have to wait to see if it starts happening again before I can check the console or before I can say if the permission repair works.

it just happened to me, second time, and I'll have to restart the macbook pro again. It's really annoying.

Btw, my Macbook Pro is new (bought it in december).
And using 10.6.2.

Anyone else with the same problem?

P.S. Just notice that spotlight just stopped working. Anything I put there just don't find any, only dictionary things. ¬¬
 
First, run Console and then try to open one of the apps you're having trouble with. What messages are posted to system.log?

System.log messages can be obtuse, but sometimes they provide a pretty good hint for what's wrong. For example, you'll see error messages in Console on a troubled hard drive before some other alert mechanisms kick in.

Second, run Disk Utility and check to see everything's OK with Verify Disk and Verify Disk Permissions.

Third, what have been your habits in terms of leaving your computer on over night? If you have OnyX (and if you don't get it), find the commands for running maintenance scripts.

Fourth, this is just my theory, but I suspect some (possibly a very small percentage) of issues people have with their Macs involve bum fonts. If you don't see any progress with the first three, you might try running Font Book and validate your fonts. So much of a Mac is involved with display, that means fonts and a bad font can, theoretically, ruin an app's day.

These are all easy, free considerations you can do. Much beyond this, you're probably going to have to take the machine into a Genius Bar and let them poke and prod your Mac.

Hey @mysterytramp, I've already restarted my computer and all has returned to normal. So I'll have to wait for the next time to try the console thing.

And just after the reboot I ran Disk Utility (verify disk e repair permissions) and everything went fine. Just some defaults warnings after repair permissions (derby warnings).

And after you saying, I ren the Validate Fonts in Font Book but it says everything is okay.

I think I'll have to try to find out what's going on running the app and check the console and see what's going on. Thanks for the tip!

And if I discover what is doing this, I'll send that to apple.

If you know precisely *when* you had your trouble, the system.logs should still have the error messages. The hitch is, if you're a few minutes off, you might waste time with irrelevant messages. Call up Console and you'll see what I mean.

If the current system.log does not have the error, scroll the left pane down a bit and you should see older system.logs that you can check out.

Here we go! I notice the computer has stopped opening applications around the initialization of parallels (don't remember if it was before it, after), which in case wasn't successful (I was apple to open Parallels but not start the virtual machine).
