Im resurrecting this thread because my macbook 06' is still kickin and hauling ass. I also just started as a FRS at apple retail (family room specialist) so i deal with iphone, ipod, ipad problems. i either swap or fix them. im loving it so far. its so hard trying to resist buying a new air or mbp and even a imac. sighh i can do it!

Hello, I thought I'd chime in for a few opinions.
I love my mid-07 MacBook 2,1 but I think it's a little long in the tooth and ready for an upgrade.

It is obviously out of warranty, and here are the things that are wrong with it:
- Crackbook case
- Dead screen (inverter or bulb)
- Dead battery

Before the screen went, I upgraded the HD to 500gigs, and it has 4gigs of RAM in it. So the machine still works. I did notice it struggles a bit with 1080p videos, but otherwise the power is pretty good. The screen size does leave a little to be desired since I picked up a DSLR and can't see my photos very well.

That said, it *is* a 4 year old laptop and counting! I know Macs have good lifespan, as you all have mentioned here. But getting the screen fixed and battery replaced seems like I'd be half way to a new MBA. That, and it's a 4 year old laptop, so who knows what might go next.

In any case, I've decided to wait on the ivy bridge refresh of the MBP, should it ever come.

If you had my laptop, would you wait like me or fix it?

I would part out the laptop and then purchased a used one from around the same year. I am using a 2006 MacBook and it flies with a SSD in it, I got the computer for less than $300 a few months back. And you might check with the Apple Store to see if you can get the case replaced, as I did just that a few weeks ago and walked out with a brand new top case.

If the laptop can still handle your day to day use, then there's no need to upgrade it yet :)

i would def wait. im waiting for the mbp refresh as well and with the performance my macbook is still giving me the wait will be painless :)

I still use my black MacBook2,1 T7200 daily. Upgraded to 4GB RAM (although it can only address 3), still run on the stock 120GB Fujitsu 5400rpm HDD, dead battery, have replaced top case with a black top case from MB3,1 (spilled water of the last), performs a tad slow with ~30 tabs in Firefox and can't handle Flash properly but well, I love this machine :D still rocking Ableton Live, Traktor Pro, even Logic Pro :D

I wanna upgrade too, but my budget doesn't allow and imho the newer aluminium MBP doesn't look as sexy as my black MB :D

I also have to resurrect this thread, because even FIVE hard drives later, my 1st Gen (June '06) MB is still my one and only computer! Wasn't until my warranty ran out with Hitachi (3 HDs in 3 years), and I bought the Seagate, (which is still in it) that my problems stopped. (I still say the temp sensors went bad, but according to the Apple "genius," they "never malfunction.")

Still runs like a champ, but only on 10.5.8. Doesn't seem necessary to upgrade until i have a 64-bit Mac. :D Does fine with non-HD on my 40" tv. HD...not so much lol I can play, rip and watch disks, but haven't been able to burn a cd in a while. And typically, the palmrests chipped along the front edge. Sounds like mine is doing alright compared to some of y'alls though. I love the whiteness - if it's real nasty inside and out, I use a Mr. Clean eraser to make it all purdy, and you'd never know it was almost 6 years old!!

My refurbished 2006 15.4" Macbook Pro is still up and running. Built like a tank. Replaced hard drive, keyboard and top once, due to spillage. Actually it has survived two spillage incidents, one redbull and the other coffee.

I bought it in late 2006. We're coming close to March 2012 and it's still alive. Has never failed me. The only issue is that the processor goes crazy when streaming; the fans go crazy. It still works at the same speed it always has, however the web is becoming too fast for it. Specially with all this streaming everywhere.

It is also chipping where I rest my right hand. I haven't been able to burn or read cd's in years - the matsushita needed to be replaced within a year, but I just never got around to it. I use an external LG drive instead. This thing could still have a few years left in it, if I replaced the hard drive and found some way to increase the ram. (impossibility? most likely) Battery replaced once and this second one is practically useless, but that's only a detail. Power chord has been replaced too. (IMO normal wear and tear.) Try to find a computer from another company that lasts 5+ years!)

Independently it runs great, but our world is just getting too fast for it. On the other hand, I think it's gonna last forever. If ever I buy a new one I will definitely keep this one for certain specific tasks.

White MacBook 1,1 still in great condition. SSD recommendations?

I am still using a first generation White MacBook. AppleCare provided me with a new motherboard, disk drive, and upgraded my HD to 80 gigs when it was in for the other problems. Since AppleCare expired almost 3 years ago, I have had no trouble with this computer.

Last weekend, I migrated all of my data to an iMac and reinstalled Leopard and Snow Leopard. Now I am thinking of replacing my HD with a SSD.

Any recommendations on what to get?

Thanks!

My first gen is still working and looking great. I went for the aluminum when they came out but I kept the 1,1 in the family by passing it down to my daughter for med school.

It's the 2.0 white running 10.6.4 with 2GB RAM and the 250GB drive from the aluminum. No scratches chips or cracks.

Aluminum owners call theirs a "Collector's Edition" but we know better ;)

I know this post is ancient, but I'll reply anyways. It's easier to collect a MacBook that doesn't dry out and crack with age. The only other MacBook I'd consider picking up would be the BlackBook, and only if it's in mint condition. I'm glad to see a lot of people here are still using their trustworthy apple products, but I have to say.. If you've replaced more than half of the internal components due to spills you're not really using the same ol' trusty computer. That's like me completely blowing out my engine and transmission on my car and then talking it up because it's lasting me a long time even though two of the most important parts are brand spanking new (not the same age as the rest of the car).

My dad's mid '07 is still running fine - just needs the battery to be replaced. The only reason why he's upgrading, is because I'm giving him my old mid 2009 macbook pro
