ny times, other magazines, netflix... show GIGS of storage being used. cached files? is there a way to clear that? on my phone, for example, netflix show 86 megs.

86 MB is almost nothing these days. Does this show for data and documents for Netflix?

no, on my iphone it shows 86mb. on the ipad it's close to a gig. and two newspapers (including the new york times) use up about 2 and 3 gigs.

Sounds like perhaps either downloaded content or cached content. Typically the only official and fool-proof way to free up that space would be to uninstall and re-install the app in question.
