I removed all my songs, podcasts and pictures. Then put everything back on. And I still have 5 gigs of other. I think a total restore is somewhere in our future.

That's what I would have thought. Maybe we are the only ones since noone seems to know how to fix it. Lol

Damn..this just happened to me. Did you guys figure out a solution? I'm pretty sure this has something to do with rock. I wasnt on my phone that much today but the last time I remembered my icons being there was wen i launched rock bc I had a update notification on it..it didnt fully load so i closed out of it and put my phone away then the next time i opened it my apps were gone

It could be a number of things.
Rock is now doen. Cydia bought it. So stop using it. :p
It has script errors that fill your phones memory I think. Some crazy bug, Rock was never stable so please just use cydia.

It also could be a syncing error. If I rember correctly if you ssh into the place where all your music is, and delete it, it should resync, but have no ghost-like data

So this happened to me yesterday, and I wasn't too pleased! So spent all of last night, restoring, jailbreaking, and getting everything back to exactly how it was.
And now, its just happened again. I am fuming! Someone must know a solution to this without restoring?

This happened to a guy here at work and we went in and started deleting Application folders out of /var/mobile/Applications and next thing we knew, after a few were gone, all his space started showing up in Apps again and not in Other. We went back to springboard and most of the apps were back again. He resynced to put back the deleted apps and last I heard he was still good.

Awesome, this has worked, thanks man!

Now between us we have got to figure out whats causing this....I dont want it to happen everyday! Yesterday I cant remember what it happened after, but today it was after I bought my license for bitesms, and resprung.

This just happened to me after a bitesms text- bet it is that damn bite SMS- I am ffffffng pissed

My old thread got dragged up. Either way I just posted how I fixed it in the "holy crap I lost my apps thread". I just deleted the apps in ssh and re-synced. When mine messed up I can't remember what app I was using but it happened to my wife today while she was using bitesms. So I don't know what's causing this but one more vote for bitesms.

Ouch, looking like it could be bitesms! Lets hope if it is this is sorted soon, I just bought a license for it.

The thing that really annoys me, and Im not sure if there is a way around this, but when I delete mine via SSH, and resync with iTunes, my app data/game saves are all gone.

this just happened to me today, right after I had sent a text message using bitesms

ditto to the "T" - right after a biteSMS message...

see my thread on this page somewhere....

it sucked for me - several hours of work to get it all back

i assume the real smart people will figure out a simple fix...

Which version of bitesms are you guys using? Is it version 4.99 or the 5.0 beta? I'm using the current stable version 4.99 and nothing like what you've described has happened...at least not yet.

I just checked, and I'm using version 4.99 of bite SMS. Let's hope the developers check this out.

I had the same thing happen - biteSMS text received, then all 3rd party non-jb apps disappeared. I synced and reinstalled all of my apps, but have almost 5G of "other" eating my phone's memory. Any chance of avoiding a restore? Anyone?

EDIT: I'm using 4.99

4.99 here

Oh man, everyone's on 4.99. Now I feel like I've got a ticking time bomb...lol!

I think I'll uninstall it until things get sorted out.

Edit I just installed the 5.0 beta 9 in hope that whatever is going on with earlier versions has changed. We shall see. :)

The guy at work who's problem I helped fix (as described above) was running 4.98 of bite, and while I didn't mention it at the time (because noone had linked the 2) he was just sending/receiving an SMS with biteSMS at the time his apps disappeared as well.

Quick Solution

Hi,

I've been following this thread closely since my iPhone decided that it would make all my 3rd party non-jb apps disappear. This happened after I sent a BiteSMS text (from what I remember, bite almost crashed my springboard a few times that day and I was considering un-installing it).
Today I was about to restore (then I realised that I would lose my jailbreak and everything since my last back up 2 months ago!).
So I followed some advice on this forum.
1- Download something that you can browse your iphone files with (I used PC Suite for iPhone)
2- navigate to var/mobile/Applications.
3- Delete 10 or so folders, then go into iTunes, 'Other' will go to 'Apps' and when your apps sync they will appear on your springboard (not in folders)

Now this is the part where I got over-zealous- I deleted all the folders in the Applications. 'Other' was back and all that hard effort resulted in my apps disappearing again. So I manually ticked them all, and so far they are syncing fine but 'Other' is increasing.

ALSO going overboard, I lost all my game saves, as when I went to sync the stupid phone created a backup (but obviously couldn't find the game saves), so all levels of Angry Birds have disappeared :'(

As I write this I am waiting for my phone to complete syncing. I want to also go to the App Store to see if Updates are available.

I will keep you posted!

UPDATE:
Ok, all apps but one (free app from app store) have synced and are now being updated. No game saves which fffffs me off but on the plus side I now have my apps back. In iTunes I still have nearly 600MB of 'Other' but as I have more than 3GB free this doesn't really bother me at the moment.
