I'm imagining my usage of Apple Vision Pro and just realized that me using alternative software such as 1Password instead of Keychain probably will not be possible. Apple is probably going to so deeply integrate its own software products into Apple Vision Pro, that full usage and enjoyment will not be possible using 3rd party software.

Maybe initially but it could be like CarPlay where we got third party functionality later.

My thought too. Apple knows that the app store played a huge role in the success of the iPhone & iPad (and they made a ton of $ off it as well). That said, the regulatory changes forcing an open store system may a reason why they don't offer an app store at all.

It's far too early to even guess on this. 3rd party apps will be essential to the success of the platform, and this is clearly being shown as both a leisure and productivity tool.

Anything's possible, of course, but why would Apple not implement cut-and-paste in the Vision Pro?

I imagine Apple will but it will be extremely controlled and limited. If I remember correctly, cut and paste didn't work in the first generation iPhone or it was very limited. I didn't own the first-generation iPhone.

Well, the initial release of VisionOS might have issues and missing features due to shipment release pressures, but I'm sure those will be addressed within one or two major releases. I imagine we'll eventually (if not at day zero) have cut-and-paste functionality similar to what we have on the iPhone and iPad, although it will be interesting to see how that will operate. I'd also be surprised if Safari in VisionOS doesn't (eventually) have similar plug-in functionality to what the iPhone and iPad have; that would allow for programs like 1Password to function in-browser.

There's really no reason for Apple to not add features that the iPhone and iPad have, although shipment release pressures may cause Apple to defer features to a future release.

Probably not completely true.

First, Apple has a standard foundational library feature for a designated password autofill service.

Second, 1Password has been working with this on iPad ( and iPhone).

What 1Password can do on iPadOS probably isn't much different from what can do on VisionOS.

Similarly iOS/iPadOS allows to designate a authentication service ( and verification codes )

If you want to completely avoid autofill and use some of the esoteric features of 1Password there could be gaps.
Autofill wont necessarily work on sites that are particularly problematical. But navigation to basic sites shouldn't be a huge problem.

Apple has been laying the ground work for this for several years. Stuff like copy/paste isn't going to take 'forever'. ( probably something like if stare at a word for a while and do the 'right click' gesture then contextual menu pops up. Similar to like how on iPad you do a finger down on a word for a while... get a contextual menu. ) . 1Password runs just fine as an iPadOS app so shouldn't be a huge leap of just interacting with the app direction if just poking around at the data stored there.

Apple is probably going to so deeply integrate its own software products into Apple Vision Pro, that full usage and enjoyment will not be possible using 3rd party software.

Apple's new push on passkeys hasn't blocked 3rd party apps at all. There are new APIs to adopted, but they haven't really tried to make iCloud Keychain your only possible option.

Apple has been 'beating the drum' on SwiftUI , ARKit , UIKit , etc. for several years. Apps that have been adopting the new modern options for building apps across iPadOS and macOS should have relatively few issues working.

The developers who have considered Apple's building "kits" not useful and hacked their way around APIs to do things their way ... built their own custom widgets stack that operate differently than Apple's guidelines ... etc those apps will have more problems. 1Password is far more in the first camp than the second.

That was then. There is no reason to assume that visionOS will be any less capable than iPadOS at least when it gets released.

Wish there is a kit that converts 2D apps into VisionPro version easily. I think that's what Apple should focus on, upgrading their SwiftUI kit to make the conversion seamless and painless. I have several favorites apps that I would love to see getting converted into spatial ready.

Vision Pro is not primarily aimed at VR.
Apps running on Vision Pro don't have to present in 3D. It is augmented reality focus. Reality is 3D 'for free'. Nominally there is a 'window' just like in Finder/Windows in which apps run. Same thing as now on macOS/Windows/iPadOS. The app runs inside that 'Window'.

SwiftUI/UIKIt already worked with ARKit for years now.

There are some adjustments that Apple made. There were over 12 SwiftUI/UIKit/UI sessions at WWDC 2023

of which

Highlight that they did do lots of work already. If starting "from scratch" on a new Apple then SwiftUI is the highly suggest track to get on. But Apple has been saying that for years now before VisionOS arrived. Apps that avoided SwiftUI completely ( legacy code and/or thought it was too constraining. ) will require more work.

Doubtful there will be an 'automatic' Convert my app to SwiftUI though from Apple. SwiftUI is more 'declarative' so it is supposed to be doing more of the fine grain details of the layout anyway. Really not much of a 'bigger leap' in moving from macOS to iPadOS than they is from either VisionOS for just basic app functionality.

I have several favorites apps that I would love to see getting converted into spatial ready.

If they run in a Window they are ready. If the current app projects a 3D task into a 2D space than "popping that out" into 3D makes sense. But what probably will also see is apps that are enitrely 2D popping out 3D baubles for a 'disco effect'. Do we really need 3D 1Password? Probably not. Words are 2D . generating a new password ... 2D ... PIN to your alarm .... 2D.

It will have cut and paste. The first gen iPhone didnt have it, but the iPad did. This seems very much akin to the iPad On the OS functionality. There is no chance it doesn't copy paste when the Office site will be released for it.

I see no reason why existing apps shouldn't work out of the box, similar to how you can use iPhone apps on the iPad. Swiping gestures will be limited, and typing will be awkward, but scrolling and simple taps should be fine.

I don’t know how many apps already use SwiftUI, that may be more of a hurdle for actual conversions.
