I’m rather new to the Apple Watch (picked up a non-cellular Apple Watch Series 4) and I’m wondering if apps like CNN, BBC, and others not refreshing on their own is expected behavior. For example if I open CNN on my watch, it will show all old stories until I also open the app on my iPhone. Then it will refresh with the newest.
Anyone else have this issue? I understand the watch is an extension of the iPhone but I was hoping it’d be able to pull its own data from the WiFi networks it’s connected to.

PS - background refresh is on on both devices.
