apps opening in the background

say for example i have mail opened and I then open firefox, firefox will open but be in the background, I then have to click on the dock to view firefox or use expose??
happens with other apps aswell anyone know how i can stop this??

It happens in Firefox if you have Growl installed. There is a bug relating to how Firefox handles the interaction with Growl. That bug hasn't been fixed yet (read more about it here).

There may be some other programs that suffer from a similar bug.
