went on to software update to download 10.5.2 pressed. Installl and then restart. Wouldn't restart and came up software update timed out. I then quit software update and tried to restart the mac and this time it says finder timed out. I then tried to shut down the mac and again the same thing. Mac came with leopard pre installed.

I would stick the leopard disc in and boot to the Disc. Then run the Disk utility tool on the Disc to repair the HD and the permissions. If that doesn't work I would do an archive and install. Hope this helps, I know it seems like a lot of work.
