AppStore won't install OS X 10.10.5 update

I am trying to install the 10.10.5 update. It seems impossible. Every time I click "update" in the AppStore and confirm the reboot, a dialog pops up: The available updates have changed. When I click "Show details", nothing happens and the update gets added to the installed updates.

Maybe the download is broken? How can I force the AppStore to re-download the patch? Can I install the update anyway? Where does the AppStore put its downloads?

Open the temp folder by typing "open $TMPDIR../C/" in Terminal. Remove the files inside com.apple.appstore folder. You can also try to synchronise your system time (system preferences) which can also lead to update problems.

This is ill-advised. Using only this package won't apply any relevant firmware update and the package may install in situations where it shouldn't.
When Apple provides a standalone download, that should always be used, or Software Update should just be allowed to download the appropriate updates if it works.
