Apricorn Velocity Duo x2 will cover GTX660 Fan - Mac Pro 3,1 raid 0 options?

As the title says, I have a Mac Pro 3,1. Here is my dilemma:

Currently running Samsung 850 Pro on Apricorn Solo x1 card (runs great, really like it).

I want to add a second Samsung 850 Pro and setup with raid 0, so I figure this is a good time to get a faster PCIe card for the drives.

I need to use the second PCIe slot because that is 2.0. The higher ups are 1.0.

The Velocity Duo x2 will cover the top fan in the GTX660.

Can I go with a Solo x2 and just use a cable off it for the 2nd SSD?

I'm running two Duo x2s in my Mac Pro 5,1 with a GTX 780, and I do not have any cooling issues. One of them is in slot 2, just above the card. I must mention though, that my card is a 3 fan Gigabyte.

Do you know if the speed would be the same with two SSDs on a solo x2 (cable off the end method) as compared to a duo x2?

Just worried about covering the only fan on my graphics card. However if you are covering all 3 and still running cool, that is good to know.

I put mine in slot 3 because it covered the fan on my HD5770. One of the things I am going to look for in a GPU replacement is one where the fan is placed past the end of the Vel Duo. May even an HD5870.

Wait, The Top 2 PCIe Slots are PCIe 1.0? In a 2009+?

I should have been more specific and accurate with my wording.

2008 Mac Pro (3,1): Slot 1 & 2 are 2.0 and slot 3 & 4 are 1.0 (as far as I know)

And just to add, if the OP is concerned about GPU temps. He can always mount the GPU in slot 2, leave slot 3 open and mount the Duo in slot 1. And yes, my Duo covers all three fans in my GTX 780.

Wow, I feel like a complete moron. It didn't even hit me to put the GPU in slot 2 and the duo in slot 1.

Ok, last thing I hope - Is there any downside to having the GPU in slot 2? I know they are both 2.0 spec so I would think not.

When I had my 2008 3,1 Mac Pro, there was a time I place my Nvidia 680 gtx on slot 2 as I had a GT120 on slot 1. Everything ran fine with no problems.

I could be wrong (not unusual for me) but the design of fans draw air instead of pushing at the fan openings. It doesn't require that much space and since its a dual fan configuration it probably makes very little difference. From looking at your photo, I believe there's enough space for adequate draw to take place.

None whatsoever, both slot 1 and slot 2 have the same specifications.
