If I had the wiring to do PoE, I'd likely go with the Unifi option.

That looks compelling -- but I'm not at the point where I want to have the wiring done in the house to be able to use it. My next house will either have wiring drops for PoE in appropriate locations, or I'll be having the wiring done afterwards.
In the midst of a whole home renovation so while the walls and moulding were being worked on, I had the GC run an Ethernet line to my doorbell. I had Ethernet run to every room in my house a couple years ago but didn’t think to do the exterior at the time.

Wait… Huh? lol

So how would this work? POE to the doorbell, fine, but does it still have a wireless communication with the chime box? Thoroughly confused.
Probably still has something like Bluetooth to communicate to the chime.

The actual news release is below - I'm wondering if "G400" is the generic model number globally, while G410 is the specific model number for the US market.

What is the G400? They already sell the G410

G400 is older version of G410 which includes 5Ghz and a different sensor to get better angle for package detection.

The chime box needs AC power, and it initiates a persistent ad-hoc Wi-Fi network with the doorbell.

still has to be wireless communication from the doorbell to the chime.
Right but the issue with this doorbell (from me at least) has always been that the processing was done on the chime box. If the chime is just acting as a chime and the processing is done on the doorbell that’s connected via Ethernet, then it should be a lot better.

Yes but that connection was terrible. If POE is going into the doorbell, then I assume processing will be done on the doorbell too, instead of the chime box, which hopefully is just a chime with this new one.

My connection between the two is fine. PoE isn’t going to solve that.

What data is that? It is utilizing HomeKit protocol (secure) and is just a hub .
It’s utilizing HomeKit if you setup with HomeKit first and ONLY HomeKit.

If you setup with the Aqara QR code, they get access to all your wifi, bluetooth and location data.

If you don't use the Aqara app, you cannot update the firmware. Which means you don't have access to RTSP and other features, including potential security updates.

Exactly. Aqara forces you to share data with them in exchange for features and updates. Their HomeKit and Matter integration is basically just marketing with practical features locked behind data sharing. I returned all their devices after spending days trying to get around the limitations.

That would make no sense to me, the processing would be done at the doorbell, and the Chime is a chime when directed to make noise.

I'm not a fan of excessive data sharing, but so what if they have my home address? I'll trade that for the convenience/simplicity and price value ratio they offer. It's not nearly as bad as Ring, and there are no mandatory subscriptions for Aqara.

The processing is done at the chime, because it has a constant AC power source. Easier to engineer both a transmit radio and processing power if you have something more stable than AA battery power to rely upon.

You should have spotted that it is referring to the battery powered G4, I asked the same question to Perplexity and told it to ignore the G4 and it says the G400 processing is done at the doorbell not the chime.

If the G400 isn't even in customer hands (yet), how would we expected any AI to know such differences?

well it does when you prompt it specifically.

We know the G400 is PoE or hardwired, so when that Perplexity response talked about conserving battery life... wrong unit.
