Archive and install 10.3 to 10. 4

I'm going to upgrade my OS from Panther to Tiger.
With "Archive and install" does it compress the old system before putting it in the Bibliotech. I'm worried that I won't have enough space left on my HD to hold the two systems. For the moment I have about 8.5 GB of free space with no app's running.(after a reboot)
Or... can I archive the old system to my ext. HD ( How) I'm not planning to install " other languages" or "other Printers" with the Tiger install.
