my laptop was being really slow the other day. i had nothing to do, so i decided to go ahead and reinstall osX. backed all my music and photo's up, then saw that i could just do an archive and install, and have a previous system folder.

i have no previous system folder, and the icons in system preferences for shapeshifter, itheater and flip4mac are no longer there. before the archive and install i had 53 gigs available, now i have 47.8. any ideas on how to get that memory back?

Where have you looked? Based on the fact your available disk space was reduced, I would think you do indeed have a Previous System folder. I do believe this is put on the root of the drive, so perhaps you could take a screenshot of your hard drive in Finder or execute the following command in Terminal and post back with the results.

ls -la /
