I didn't see anyone mention this one, but the old classic game Archon is now out in a (single player only) configuration for the iPhone. Graphics and sounds have been updated from the original release, but the core gameplay is all held intact. Price is $3.99.

For those not familiar with the original game, it plays out on a chess-like strategy board between Light and Dark factions. However, when you land on an opponent's square, you fight it out in a quick arcade-like fight. Different pieces have different capabilities when fighting. The generic knights swing a sword, while many others like unicorns and djinn can shoot ranged weapons, and specials like the phoenix and banshee have an area of effect damage radius. The shapeshifter assumes the same body of whatever he lands on. Each turn, if your "king" piece is alive, you can cast a variety of spells such as heal, revive, exchange, etc. Each spell can only be cast once. To win you want to control 5 power points on the board or eliminate all opponents. To further complicate strategy, the squares are constantly changing in color, which influences how effective you are in battle (the lighter the color of the square, the more favor to Light side, and vice versa).

It's a wonderful blend of strategy and arcade skill. I think newcomers to the game will find it's classic gameplay still fresh after all these years, while fans of the original will be pleased to find the gameplay holds up so well after all this time.

Game controls could probably use a little "tightening" and a multiplayer mode would be great, but all in all the initial release is excellent.

one of my favorite games from my Atari 800 days. A true classic. I bought it last night, only had time to play a little but it seemed pretty good.
