I've been holding off from buying a 24" iMac because of all the reports of screen gradient problems... and I'm wondering if Apple has finally figured out what was causing all the problems and solved it?

Are the latest 24" iMacs now free of screen gradient and other screen problems?

I won't be buying one until the new iMacs come out in January, but am just curious if the latest 24"ers are free of screen problems.

The widespread reports of 200-300% brightness gradients have all but disappeared. You still do get the occasional more mild gradient, and even the best LCDs have some brightness non-uniformity. But other than those minor hiccups that can be expected with electronics manufacturing, I would say you will more than likely be good.

Check out this thread for some reference points.

buy it, if there's a problem, take it back for an exchange.

The issue is still their, but not as bad!

If you don't look for it you don't see it!

I couldn't wait for the january release of the new imacs. I should have but thats life.

So I got mine a month ago knowing well I'd be envious when the new ones came out! Shame they didn't get release on time with the unibody macbook.

In some way I'm hoping they won't be upgraded to LED so I feel better about my purchase .

The screen is still gorgeous though!

I bought my 24" aluminum iMac in August, 2007 the day they were released. I had the display replaced for a bad gradient and then about 6 months after that sent it in again for another LCD panel replacement when the inverter on the first replacement started going bad.

I got a gradient-free panel in that last replacement just over a year ago and it's been fine ever since.

I wonder if the new iMacs rumored to be released next month will have a major body redesign and more importantly whether they will switch to an LED backlight like the recently released Apple Cinema Displays. If so it should end all discussion of gradients permanently (and mercifully).

From the 4 Early 2008 iMacs I've had (all exchanges :(), two of them had a really bad gradient with a brownish tint in the corners. The other two had a gradient, but it was so small that it couldn't bother me.

So, I would not say that the problem is completely gone, but you always have a chance to end up with a pretty nice display. :)
