i have a 16gb black, with a little light leak on the left, nothing major and thats about it.
no cracks
no pixels

i think my black is a little negative compared to someones 8gb black iphone that i saw, but that could just be the 8gb are a bit diff than 16gb.

im just nervous if i exchange it that i will get somethin worse and since mine isn't that bad i should probably just keep it and enjoy it.

From my own personal experience, you certainly get anything worse. So if they agree to replace it, you can check it right in front of them and only leave if you're happy with what you've received.

I received two refurbs right at the genius bar with dust under the screen, and the genius didn't even give me the option to take the replacement phone. He just went into the back and replaced that one with a new one. When i left, i had a perfect, brand new phone.

Ah idk what to do. I don't notice dust on mine. I probably have none but I don't know if I would even notice it on a new phone. Idk what to do. I mean I don't really put the phone bright enough to see light leak also the black isn't off that much but I do notice mine is a bit more yellow than my friends 8gb but aren't all 8gb less yellow

I'm not sure what your post is about then. If u don't want to return it then don't return it. If the issues mentioned are bothering u enough then get it checked out. Why r u worrying about what u will get for exchanging it when u can't even make up your mind if u want to take it into the store in the first place?

this is what i know about this whole debate-

Apple is only obligated to give you a replacement but it can be a refurb or new.

The geniuses are never told whether the replacement units are refurbs or new.

While the 1st gen refurbs were given a 5K serial number, a moderator on Apple's Discussion Board posted that new 3Gs are being given 5K serial numbers.

I've asked the opinion of several geniuses and their consensus has been that most likely they are still new, they don't know for sure and as time goes on the refurbs will be there.

The white box has nothing to do with this- new or refurb they will come in the plain white box to save on packaging costs.

I can confirm refurbs have the 5K in them. I exchanged mine last week and received a phone with it.

STOP SPREADING FALSE INFORMATION :mad::mad::mad:

both of my iPhones ( new one, and replacement) had the serial 5K

let me say it one more time

Replacement iPhones are not refurbs

The question is: How do you know that it is a refurb???

i think i might just keep it. i would only return it if i knew the phone i got would be perfect, but its not that easy to check all the things wrong with a phone and i think the apple guy would think im nuts.

i mean the phone works fine and everything is good. i should probably just return it when its like 6 months that way its like half year.

i just hear horror stories of havin to get like 3 refurbs til its right.

I can't comment for sure on the serial numbers, but I do know you can get a refurb if you get a replacement iPhone. I got a replacement today, and was told specifically I was getting a refurb. It doesn't make any sense that they're getting defective phones back and throwing them into the trash.

Does it have a serial number beginning 5K? (You can find it in Settings -> General -> About).

Ok, I am sorry, I just don't get the point of this thread. Who cares if it is a refurb or brand new. If it works like it is supposed to, does it really matter if the internals of the phone were already in use at one point or another. If your current phone is have problems and not working right, wouldn't it be better to just go in and exchange it for one that does work right and has no problems? Why keep a "new" phone that does not work right if you can get a "refurb" that is perfect.

Oh, and by the way, most people still agree that the phones we get for exchanges at this time are new and not refurbs, FWIW.

Just my 2 cents.:)

i agree with you

its the people who start saying " oh it has 5k, therefore IT HAS TO be a refurb" that need to be smacked

We currently do not know when ( if they already haven't) started replacing phones with refurbs

the point is though the 5K is not indicative of a refurb ( both my brand new july 11th iPhone 3G and the replacement iPhone both had 5k serials)

Well I do know for a fact that at least some of the replacements are refurbs. My first replacement phone was definitely refurb'd because the screen was from an iPod Touch, I noticed it because the original touches had a slightly different color and they were not quite as bright as the 3Gs screen. It also was just terrible quality, none of the buttons actually "clicked" they just pushed in and the edges around the entire phone were not sitting flush and it was really bad.

I kept getting really crappy refurbs from them and eventually got tired and just sold my phone to someone for the price of a new phone, and then just went and bought a brand new phone. Immediately the quality was much better.
