Yes, its the 4.3.3 baseband. This has been discussed on this very page. Your only choice is to go back to 4.3 if it annoys you.

Good to know, thank you! I can deal with it for now. I'll wait for the verdict on 4.3.4 or maybe just wait for 5.0. Thanks again!

So now, can someone that is happy with the tweak please state what iOS version he has, what did he use for jb, and if he has mobilesubstrate installed or not ?
And of course if it's an iPhone 4 or 3GS

Refurbished iPhone 3GS
Mobile Substrate installed
Redsn0w for Mac
iOS4.3.2

Packages such as iRealSMS, 3GUnrestrictor, MyWi, Folder Enhancer, Color Keyboard, DeleteMail, Activator, Action Menu, CyDelete. LockInfo, Multifl0w, SwipeNav.

It obviously doesn't feel like an iPhone4, but the opening animations being smooth really, really helps.

Well, I restored back to stock 4.3.3 just to see what it's like again after using the aforementioned "tweak" for over a week now.

Suffice to say, it's hell. Choppy opening animations, stuttering midway through launches (Messages, Phone, Settings), and just generally sluggish navigation.

My iPhone 4 is now in the process of being jailbroken again, because there's no way I can use stock 4.3.3 again ...

Ok, I tried going ack to 4.3.3 with jailbreaking and using the "tweak" then compare it to my wife's 4.2.1 - the results are as follows:

• the removal of the two lines does make a difference as everyone noted here
• the addition of the old lines do not add any value, and apps still don't load while the animation runs, you can test it youselves if you want.
• if you download an app from the app-store without the need to enter the password again (meaning you download twice in less than 15 mins), the zooming out off the app store and then going to the page where the app icon will sit, stutters lIke hell !!! On the 4.2.1 if there are only 3 rows of icons it almost does not stutter.
• when shooting a video with the camera app and zooming out of it to a page with more than one line of icons, stutters like hell !!! On the 4.2.1 much less !
• on the mobile phone app when you call a person from the recents list the zooming out feels less smooth in many out of the calls I performed. On 4.2.1 - almost unnoticeable.

4.2.1 is not stutter free but you can feel that even with the "addition" of the tweak in 4.3.3, 4.2.1 feels much less heavy on the iPhone 4 platform.
Don't forget that on 4.2.1, applications DID launch during animations and it didn't feel that heavy.

I really don't know what apple have done here with 4.3.x but it might be just the fine-tuning done for an A5 chip instead of the A4.

If you ask me, I still don't know which one I prefer. I'm still changing my mind everyday, but at least now I know all the pros and cons of each one.

Jonathan.

Two questions:

1. Could there be another string value to put in place of 'pre-animate' (iPhone 4) or 'post-animate' (iPhone 3GS)? This would allow the key 'launch-mode' to still be there so Cydia and other apps would still be able to check this key, but would eliminate the animation issue.

-If so where or how can we find out what string values are allowed for this key? Is there any documentation in the SDK?

-You would think that the post-animate would work to resolve the stutter/lag telling the app to load post animation, but I have a 3GS and it stutters like crazy with the default 'post-animate' configuration.

2. Has any iPhone 4 users tried to put 'post-animate' string instead of the 'pre' like the iPhone 3GS has to see if this resolves the issue for iPhone 4s?

I am happy to confirm that the animation "glitch" when opening third party apps for the first time is GONE in iOS 5.

The same apps that simply popped open now display their full launch animation nice and smoothly.

Well chuffed. :D

Good news. Id suspect its cause iOS5 was compiled off of an older codebase, and tweaked from there. iOS5 has definitely been in development since before 4.3.3 came out. Hopefully they won't screw it up again.

Also, in every release of iOS 4, when you had a full screen off apps (16 icons) the multi-tasking tray was very judder when opening.

No more! Double click, nice smooth animation as the screen moves up and the multi-tasking tray is revealed.

And this is only Beta 1 ... good times. :D

I agree, there is the animation when you're trying to open 3rd party apps. That's great but...

There are still choppy animations while entering Settings App or Messages. It's really hurtful. Hope that they will fix that in Beta 2, or just final release.

Here is an another example but in a different situation:

I guess the "Call Failed" issue happens with iPhone 4s only?

I rolled back to iOS 4.1 on my 3GS. Performance is much better, and I haven't had any call issues. Even after having iOS 5.0, any newer baseband doesn't seem to cause problems with the older iOS versions.

Also, Apple is still signing 4.1 for me, which is just amazing (no, Cydia's IP isn't in my hosts file). I think it's a sign that they want me to keep my 3GS on 4.1.

LOL, I had a whole thread swearing Apple signed a 4.1 blob for me recently, and no one believed me.

I had the same conversation with some other people on a different forum.

I don't know how to "prove" such a thing. iSHSHit, iTunes, and TinyUmbrella request from Apple, it gives the OK to install 4.1. Not 4.2.1, not 4.3.2, not 4.0.2. Just 4.1 and 4.3.3. No messing with the hosts file or any other redirects. TinyUmbrella and iSHSHit can be set to request only from Apple, so it's not like they only use Cydia.

I guess I could record a video of a clean install of Windows or Mac OS X, a clean install of iTunes, and a clean Restore to 4.1.

Apple is 100% still signing iOS 4.1 for some people.

I have the exact same two blobs. Glad theres more evidence.

I own an iPad 1 with iOS 4.3.3, upgraded from iOS 4.2. I also get choppy animations when opening apps from the home screen - and this has also happened with stock iOS apps too! Sometimes the animation is sligthly choppy and other times the animation doesn't happen at all, and instead the app takes a second to open and it suddenly appears.

Yes, this is what apple does. They trick you into updating your firmware to the latest and greatest little by little, they make it slower and slower. It almost like they think you wont notice. And theyn by the time you hit 4.3.3, (just an example) its about time for the new iphone to come out. And you're looking at yours like, man, i need to upgrade.

It doesnt make any sense to me why it would run the way it does now. Its not like they added something different in the user interface, or some other graphical enhancement. its been the same crap for 4 years! Yet its smooth initially, then degrades....

a 3G on 4.2.1 will make you hang yourself.

Apple has had these "lag" issues before and fixed it in a then-future software update - even someone e-mailed Steve and he confirmed a future software update is fixing the issue (this was ages ago though) so I don't think they are intentionally causing the animation lagging we're experiencing - it's a bit of a conspiracy theory to be saying Apple are intentionally doing this...how on Earth do you know? I'm sure Apple will fix this in a future software update. If Apple doesn't fix it I'm sure some disgruntled customers will go elsewhere for a non-Apple smartphone for their next purchase perhaps with how crap the user experience is so I think what you're saying is a load of a rubbish.

I still delete the two lines on my iphone 4 which makes it much smoother. I also did it on my ipad but haven't really noticed a difference and no other side effects from deleting the two lines either.

So ios5 users have apple fixed this themselves or do we still have to do it in ifile?

Thanks

iOS 5!!!

The laggy animations drove me NUTSO. I hated it so much. I am pleased to report that iOS 5 has completely solved these issues (on all fronts)

Hooray!

Does this work with page scrolling?

Does the iFile mod work with choppy scrolling, lets say, through a list? Because when I scroll through lists on my iPod, it does not scroll smoothly. Please reply if you have the answer.

I Salute You All

Hi Guys,

IOS 5 did not cure the animation lag (on 'my' phone), all it did was screw up my Cover-Flow...
(I've still not spotted any of the 200+ improvements it was meant to offer).

So I fainally jail-breaked my phone, & amended the annimation commands, detailed in this log...
Wow !!!... It's a miracle.

For the first time in nearly a year, my iPhone runs smoothly again!
Thank-You, Thank-You, Thank-You Guys !

There's a 'SmoothCoverFlow' jailbreak app, which has 'improved' my coverflow, rather than '100% fixing it'... so if ever you find any IOS code that screwed it up (& can be deleted or re-wrtitten) please post that too!

Many thanks :D:D:D
