I got my X on launch day at an Apple store. Currently the stores near me (Minneapolis) and where I will be on Friday (Chicago) are showing currently unavailable. Does that mean there won’t be any available in store on Friday?

I’m sure there should be some set aside for walkins to buy.

They typically set certain amounts that is available for online order pick ups and certainly they set aside for walk-in's.

Apple stores normally do have stock for walk ins, they just dont show it online so they dont oversell the stock.
I hope so. I’m going to go to the Chicago store on Thursday and see if they’ll at least tell me if I should bother coming there Friday morning.

The store near my home didn’t have any walk-in stock for iPhone X last year at launch. Guess each store might be different though...

My Apple store doesn't but all of the best buys near me have plenty of stock
I'm pretty certain that your Apple Store will have in stock as they set certain amount for walk-in's. I know last year when I tried to take up at 6 am to score one, but at first it showed available but then it was not as I was too late, I decided to go in early and line up, and they actually had them. I asked them what the difference was and they said, they keep certain amount aside for walk-ins.

So they will have them in stock.

I’ve never been to the Chicago store on Michigan Ave. Won’t mind standing in line. Hopefully by Thursday store employees will be able to share with customers what’s happening on Friday.

6AM on launch day or 6AM on Sat? I thought they don't restock friday at 6AM (and allow you to order for pickup)?

6 AM on Saturday. Typically what happens is that on launch Friday, when people line up, they'll likely reserve 2 different colors and mess around with the display and probably finds they like one and not the other, so they don't pick up one but pick up others. What happens then is at night, it resets and at 6 AM your time, if you are fast enough, you can check apple.com and show available for pick up. That's how I was able to get the iPhone X on saturday, 11/4/17.
