I guess you'll have to shop like the rest of us. I've never heard of any store putting on reserve a product that has not been officially introduced, let alone if it even exists.

Good point, since the product hasn't been announced yet...it's probably not in the inventory/sales system yet.

So how is he supposed to reserve it? Stick up a post-it note?

I didn't mean reserve it right then; I was asking if there was some kind of list I could be put on to be notified of a new product so I could make a call afterwards. And guess what - there is! I wasn't trying to push myself ahead of anyone else to get the first MBP; I'm fairly aware of how things generally work in the sales industry.

I don't mean that I literally feel safe when I go to one, I just mean there's a level of certainty that an experience at my "main" Apple store is going to be a positive one. I work retail, so I realize that there are always jerks and bad moods and other variables, but come on!

If you worked retail, then you'd know better. Some people are nicer than others, and that's at any store.

Yeah, seriously.

They're not going to make an exception for you.

Gimme a break. No one's asking anyone to make any exceptions. Asking for notifications doesn't make me the bad guy; it makes me the person that wants to be in the loop. According to the Apple store, they have a feature for things like that, which I found out. I'm not trying to bypass they system or do anything sketchy to put myself ahead.

 If they're not even acknowledging things that are rumored to be coming out soon, how would they have a "feature" like that?

Are you thinking of Apple's e-mail alerts?

(For that matter, why wouldn't you just sign up for them? They would tell you when new product is coming out, and with greater specificity than anything you'd probably hear from an Apple store employee.)

Under the 'Contact Me' screen on any of the computers set up at the Apple store, you can fill out a page of information where Apple can find you to notify you if any new products are available. There's also a page where you can reserve a product when it becomes available, under which Macbooks, Mac Pros, etc. are listed. Since MBPs aren't a totally new product, it would fit under one of the categories (but I didn't check) since it's just an update.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I was getting at. You can also sign up online for Apple to contact you about new products and services, but you're typically not going to find out any more than Apple is willing to tell you by asking one of their store employees.

That is one of the reasons I barely ever shop in a brick-and-mortar store. Its well worth the shipping to never have to talk to anyone.

You should have smiled and said Thanks. Then turned to your buddy and say "Damn, I need 150 of these things, lets go to CompUSA"

They hate it when you do that! :D

Could Apple employees really not know anything until they're notified? Do they really know even less "insider" information than any person on any of these Mac forums?
With ~160 stores @ ~25 employees per store, if Apple retail employees had specific advanced knowledge of new products, there'd be leaks all over the web.

Apple is so anal about that type of stuff that they just fired retail employees that downloaded the developer version of Tiger that was leaked to the web.

The guy you dealt with was definately a jerk with how he responded to you, should have known to tell you how to sign up for info like you figured out, but yes, he's really kept in the dark about new products.

my exact thoughts on everything.

oh and NO, the apple store DOES NOT work on commission in ANY WAY, they are of course held to sales figures and goals, but they dont get any money from selling anything. Just hourly wage.

Well said...I'm a sucker for revenge :D

Its retail...I work at a hardware store, do you think I know anything about fixing your sink, painting your walls or patching a hole in your wall? No, I don't I'm there to get paid.

The people at the apple store know about the computers that are in the store, they are there to get paid and they don't care how much more about Macs you know. They are there to sell computers, they DONT want people to know that the Core 2 Duo's come out very soon. Do you think apple would trust over 1000 young people with info about the new product? No way in hell.

Some may only know the details of the products that are out, since they're not really supposed to be posting at rumour sites. There are probably lots of Apple fans that don't know about Intel's merom.

They're not even supposed to visit rumor sites, much less post on one. So the Apple Store employees do tend to be in the dark about such things.

Me: "I'll mostly be using it for programming, like using XCode and stuff"

Apple Store Guy: "Is there a Mac version of that? I'll have to check...."

Me: "Er...it's an Apple product."

Also, can anyone confirm the following to me: The UK edu store says that all edu purchases now come with 3 year warranty.
I asked my local retail store about this and was told that warranty isn't available in store or online!
So I sent the guy back a screenshot of the edu page to show him that I wadn't making it up - he's not got back to me.

So I'm wondering, has anyone bought in store with the Higher Education discount and received the 3 year warranty? (I don't see why they'd do it online and not in store....)

Although maybe i'm better purchasing online - I have visions of going into the store and being told that such a warranty doesn't exist.

I bought my iMac on 5/5/05 (the first Rev. 2 iMac in the state) and it only came with the one year warranty, but still given the " You should get AppleCare in case pihrannas eat it, a very common problem" speech. Maybe they've changed it since then.

That's EXACTLY what I was thinking of doing! "I need to buy one of those new fantasy machines - oh, sorry, I meant the new MBPs."

But I would hate for him to get commission, if they do. I kind of doubt it, but if they do, I'm going to go to another guy that practically gave me his number during a mini-speech involving winks and how I should buy the laptop from him when I'm ready.
They don't get commission, just a decent salary for a college kid.

The guy works in retail not IT, why would you expect him to have a clue?
What makes you think him being in IT would make the matter any different? :D
They'll give a A+ to anyone.

I had a warranty issue, and both my local apple store and apple care phone support were both very hard to work with.

Quite frankly, it put a sour taste in my mouth for all future purchases.
