In my opinion;
The iPad was nothing like what I (most?) where expecting - I was hoping for something more like this
The new mac mini - looks nice and all, but is no longer the mac that everyone could afford.
All the antenna issues with the iPhone 4 (it looks and feels amazing though)
The new iPod Nano - that thing looks ugly and horrible to use (although I haven't touched one yet)

Apple TV seems to be a backward step - loosing functionality for the price point.

And no upgrade to the iPod classic made me sad. :(

I may get hate for this, but it's just my thoughts. If anyone else thinks differently, then please - I would love to hear you thoughts.

In regards to the iPad - if it had been like that tablet that your link refers to, then I propably wouldn't have bought one. The reason is that such a tablet with a full OS and very large screen has several issue that would be a deal breaker for me, and I'd suggest most iPad buyers too - namely weight, shorter battery life and reduced ease of use, for example no more instant on and off and more complex OS have more complex problems. All these features would undoubtedly further add to the cost too. It was launched as fitting in a niche between phone and laptop, but closer to the phone as a communications and entertainment device with limited productive capabilities, not vice versa.

The Mac Mini refresh is odd - I'll give you that. Now a Mac Mini with an Apple 27" monitor costs as much as an iMac. I hypothesise that the Mac Mini probably only sells to a specific niche - probably the same niche that buys designer skinny jeans and Italian fixed gear bikes (that they can't ride safely) so that they can be different, just like all of their mates.

The iPhone4 antenna issue has been, in my opinon, blow out of proportion. Sure, you can disrupt the signal by holding it in a certain way. But the same is true for the 5 Nokia phones I've owned over the past decade, or my fiancee's Crackberry. In reality, the antenna design flaw probably doesn't cause many real issues. I think the media over-reported and got over-zealous in the execution of their role - the thing you need to remember is that most "news" regarding Apple is often opinion and not neutral and factual reporting of the status quo. The majority of reports were either a) individuals and certain media outlets that live from web-page hits, so sensationalising news results in more dollars, and b) individuals with a "Chicken Little" complex who extrapolate doomsday scenarios from any little thing.

The new Nano is an opinion thing. I don't like the way it looks, but I do like it for its utilitarian nature. To be honest, I will probably buy one. Now if only it could function as a remote for the iPhone and iPad and allow the use of headphones with an in-line mic for calls via Skype and, on the iPhone, phone calls...

Apple TV - no comment as I have never even seen one in the wild, let alone used one, so I cannot make any judgement as to the validity of the changes.

And lastly, the iPod Classic is, I fear to say, on its last legs. Those people that I know who have purchased one in the last year or so have done so purely as a mass storage device for photos or video for when they are shooting on location. I assume that the number of people who have the need to carry more music than they could ever listen to in one charge is dwindling and instead people are uploading certain playlists that suit their modd or activities for the coming day.

...There were some people (me and my friends) who did and still go for the larger capacity you can only get on such a device...

Pet peeve of mine, but it's "my friends and I". Only the ass mentions himself first.

That should be American Grammar Nazi. :D. And yes, it's "its" isn't it? :p

It should be "its" as it's is short for "it is" and "Are Apple losing it is touch?" sounds daft. However, as the OP is from the UK, the correct title is "Are Apple losing their touch?" as Apple, as a corporate entity, is referred to in the plural.

Apple's not losing it's touch. The proof is that market share for all their devices is growing, outpacing the industry (except for Android, but it still has a good lead there).

Mere personal opinion about a recent product doesn't mean they're losing their touch for making popular products. I don't universally like everything they make, but I wouldn't go near as far as saying that's proof they're losing their touch.

...and why do you even bother mentioning the iPod nano if you haven't even used it yet?

More capacity, longer battery life, better display, new enclosure, faster processor. Need I go on?

Faster processor? What for? New enclosure? Why, just for giggles? Better display? Isn't the display already great? Face it, the classic is not a major seller. It does what it needs to do and it does it well. Sure, they could improve a few things but it doesn't sell much so it really isn't beneficial to keep investing money into updating it.

That could be down to Apple not updating that product line. I'm not at college any more but back then everyone iPod minis. There were some people (me and my friends) who did and still go for the larger capacity you can only get on such a device.
There's a market there. It's just not paved with apps, adverts and other revenue generating services.

Its a small market. Lets be realistic, 4 years at college on a decent sized university and I have never seen one? None of my friends own one either. I see a crapload of Touches though. I see a crapload of iPhones and MacBooks, but never a Classic. That should say something.

Apple is ramping up to make millions of ipads every month yet people around here will say Apple is losing its touch.:D Some just don't like the direction the company is going and they are entitled to that opinion, but the products aren't bad because they don't meet the needs of a few fan boys.

Crazy isn't it? The iPad is a great success thus far, and I'm sure Rev 2 will be even better. Haters gonna hate.

Zunes aren't that bad...I think the whole thing Microsoft have there with the PC and their Xbox is really quite good.

The Zune is fine but the Zune store sucks. But the problem is, Apple doesn't really have to compete with anyone in the iPod market since the competition doesn't amount to much. Look at the iPhone, Android is a serious threat to it so Apple just gave it a awesome update.

You're talking about the iPod classic right?

Capacity has already been higher than it currently is, and they have brought it down. Faster processor? Has that ever been a selling point for a iPod classic? Need I go on?

WHAT?!

Apple lost their touch?! I dissagree and the significant 2 day stock price up to $10US and holding seems to have a LOT of ppl agreeing with me.

1. Jobs' most forgotten phrase is: Always stay hungry! That's greed/desire depending on how you look at it and has NEVER been more to the point of all of Apple's endeavors - to provide something MUCH better and do so hungrily. Right now the music industry, audio player industry, heck even the portable gaming industry have ALL collectively fallen behind ~ Nintendo most glarringly!

2. iPod Nano is a SMART & Revolutionary stage of growth.
- this is a mass-market decision and also to prime tweenies or low grade school kids to get used to Apple's multi-touch GUI paradigms; these kids will be using/designing/pushing the mutli-touch GUI computers/tablets/screens of the future.

3. AppleTV is PERFECT!
- no longer a hobby. Jobs is right ... many ppl do NOT want to connect their computer to their TV, not directly but maybe wirelessly or as seamlessly as possible. GONE are the days/hopes/dreams of where Remington Steele had his PC connected to the projector in the living room condo.
- No HDD, yet with USB connection, and proper streaming - hopefully with more CableTV networks signing on - will allow for higher profits for Apple, shareholders and networks alike.

4. IP4 Antennae issues.
- no defending this; just not so severe north of the border of AT&T or across the pond. The issue I think is horrible AT&T network (reason why their 3G cannot handle FaceTime or 5Mbps Uploads; many major cities in Canada already have this ability).

Jonny Ive is doing just fine; but I feel that more input for hardware by engineers is hampering his design. iPad from the rear looks week, but we'll see if dual glass or dual-display is possible with even stronger glass on both front/rear to mimic a larger IP4. iMac is pretty much due for a complete redesign but its getting harder to push the design while remaining functional I think.

Wait. Now the longer battery life and capacity i could really agree with. But a better processor and enclosure? The thing that makes the iPod classic awesome is that it's very simplistic.

The DAC Chip in the iPod classic is better than one in the iPod touch. So why mess with the classic?

No it is the same DAC. only the video had the different DAC. the classic and all the touches up to the 3rd gen have had cirrus DAC instead of the awesome woflson ones in the ipod video. I am not sure about the new ipods because ifixit hasn't done a teardown yet but chances are, it is using a cirrus dac too.

While i agree the Classic isn't as popular anymore, the reason you've never seen one is because a classic is (for most people) for music and only music. As such, they don't walk around with them in their hand, constantly playing with them like someone with an iPhone or iPod Touch. A Classic just sits in a pocket / bag playing music, and so i'd never expect to see one out-and-about.

No. Sure, their most revolutionary product of the last five years was the iPhone, and the MacBook Air came second in terms of being unique to everything else out there (at the time). Apple internally tests dozens of designs, then brings one to the mass market for each product every year to slowly work towards perfection. Sometimes they have to learn from some mistakes that may have been leaps that were too big, such as with the iPod Shuffle.

I'm sure Apple will have a few revolutionary products in the next five years, too. You've gotta give them credit for pioneering modern smartphone design, laptop design, and even packaging design. If Apple was losing their touch, than the rest of the industry would be, too because they're all pretty reliant on Apple.

I have read the comments that have appeared overnight, and I have learned a few things.

First is that I cannot spell very well.

Another thing is that some people like the new products, but then again, I just wrote this thread in a blind rage after watching the Keynote.

And lastly - Apple will do extremely well this year, no matter what I think of their products. Or maybe I will learn to love their products, I hated the new iTunes logo, traffic light buttons, but now I quite like it.

For me the standard iPod now should be the Touch.
I hope this does not happen - I miss the click wheel all the time as I have a Touch and an iPhone. I will be buying a Classic soon enough, as I fear they may be discontinued soon. If only I wasn't such a poor student.

Better processor for coverflow and improving the speed of menu movement. And any new enclosure that makes the Classic stronger and thinner is fine by me.
Overall it's a brilliant MP3 player that Apple are seemingly let die and should my current 5G iPod suddenly die I'd have no option but to buy a new Classic.

I walk around my college campus every day and I have not once seen anyone with a classic. Everyone has a nano or touch.

I LOVE my Classic. It is the most awesome piece of gadgetry I own because it's interface is so simple, and is amazing at what it's meant to do: let you bring your music library with you.
And I've always been a fan of the click wheel. I have an iPhone as well but I never use for music unless my Classic is out of battery, because the navigating the touch screen for music can get very annoying (especially during exercise!)
Plus, I've dropped it about a 30 times and despite its having a hard drive it's still going strong!

The whole 'make it smaller and thinner' makes the object feel more flimsy and insignificant.. the classic has a nice comfortable weight.

Sorry for the rant but I really hope Apple continues the Classic line with no major changes.

Well said.

Personally I'd like to see an iPhone that is 12mm thick with the extra space used for a larger battery. Then increase the footprint just enough to include a 4" display, add SWYPE & presto... The Ideal iPhone.

If Apple made it as well as keeping one the present size I predict they'd really kill the competition.

Oh sure they're doing great now, but why not truly dominate.

I love the iPod classic too, but I do think its now counter where apple is going. Apple would rather sell you an iPhone or iPod touch that can carry some of your music but also generate revenue from the apps you'll most likely buy on the iPod touch/iPhone as well.

For what it's worth, I love my Classic. Acres of room for my music, but just as importantly there's plenty of room for me to use it as a portable drive for work stuff.

It's not as flashy or fancy as a touch, nor as compact as a nano I grant you – but it more than does the job for me.

Yes! I could not agree more.

I use mine the same exact way you do and it's ideal.

Maybe the reason no-one has a classic is because no-one else does. Or for the reason I got mine - at the time I couldn't afford an iPhone.

Also, on the size/weight side of things, I like my gadgets to be small(ish) and quite heavy, it feels nicer to me. So if the new nano for example, was closer to the weight of a shuffle, I wouldn't like that. Maybe it is better then, that they did not mess with the classic.

I didn't think about it like that before - it is probably true though, seeing as the app market is so huge.
