See that darker black the end of the lightning cable is sitting in? It's a adapter piece that comes out, lets you put several different types of cables in there and have it fit perfectly

It appears though however no one has any kind of replacement for this type of thing. Are charging docks not a thing anymore? I always loved them but can't find any.

They're not as common but there are still some options out there. There are also prior threads on Lightning dock options that you can refer to.

I use this one for my iPhone and iPad depending on which one needs it. The size is better for the iPad, but it works with the iPhone, too.
