Hi All,

Newbie here and maybe a noob question or two.

I have a Quicksliver G4 that works and one that is gutted, it kind of worked but the screen was all fuzzy so i figured it was likely on its way out and gutted it.

The working one has some marks on one side of the case but the gutted one is in really excellent shape.

So i have a working G4 with dual CPAs, 2 x 512mb ram and an air card (have not got that to work yet. Any value here or should i just gut and try to sell the case or parts?

Any value to a very clean QS case?

I am in NE near NYC and am hoping i can get a few $ out of the cases or parts so any thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks!

Dave

They still have value, but not really monetarily. If I were near you, probably the most I'd offer you would be $50 and that's just because I like Quicksilvers.

If you can find someone in your area that's interested in old PowerPC Macs you could probably get a little bit but certainly not much more than $100 max (and I am being generous).

The QS is a great Mac, it's just not worth much money.

yea i thought that people liked to rip them apart and build like a new PC inside them for laughs - pc inside a mac case - or something like that.

I would take 50 just because its of no use to me anymore and they seem to be power hungry monsters.

The screen was fuzzy? So, if anything the screen was faulty or the video card being the most likely culprit. Probably gutted a perfectly working G4...

There is indeed a small group of people who like to do that. Generally though, that's with computers that have already died. From us, that's to be encouraged, rather than gutting a working PowerPC Mac.

Honestly, you could probably make more parting out the Mac. Even the logicboard and CPU would get you probably $20-30. Individually, the parts are worth more. That's at least preferable to a recycler.

Parting it out is normally the way to go, the PSU's bring more than the whole Mac is worth, the last 5 I bought, full working QS's, I paid $20 each for.

No one wants to pay the high costs of shipping these beasts, but for the people that just need parts to keep their old QS's working.

I saw one on ebay the other day, with a dual 1.5Ghz G4 upgrade not sell for $200, because the seller wanted to ship the entire unit. These upgrade cards alone normally bring $250 easy.

Here is what I do with all my gutted cases:

I have 2. 1 I got for nothing, dual 800, 1.5gb of ram, other I paid 300 for, dual 1.6, 1.5gb of ram, lots of drive space on both, just depends if you want something, couple of companies still sell them for a lot. both have upgraded video cards, I also have a Macpro 5,1 with lots of memory and upgraded video etc etc. 500 2 years ago. all work.

I got a DA (QS wannabe) with a 1.6GHz Sonnet card in it for its opening bid of £30 to my surprise as the seller was collect only and an all or nothing. So I had to take matching cables, keyboard and mouse as well. The seller was an real Mac enthusiast and didn't want to part it all out but that was the only way he was going to make any money for the reasons you said. This was pre-Covid and people are less inclined (or even allowed right now here in the UK) to travel far to pick stuff up now.

I had to stop accepting old desktop Macs. I ran out of space :)

PowerBooks and iBooks store more easily :apple:

Sell them as a lot for $10. Someone will pick that up, post about their deal online, other people online will jealously live vicariously through ops pictures and you can buy yourself a Starbucks Venti with an extra shot afterwards as you reflect on diverting old hardware away from the dump.

Everyone wins.
