Are "kit" lenses "bad"?

Granted, it's a half stop slower

It's half a stop slower at 18mm. It's a full 2 stops slower at 55mm. But the IS version of Canon's kit lens is a decent lens, especially for the price.

It depends on the kit lens. I personally would buy the camera kit and sell the kit lens and put the money towards a better lens.
