In general, are laser printers more long lasting than inkjets?

When not using the laser printer, is it better to let it enters the sleep mode or turn it off? Not sure if turning it off and on is good for longevity of the printer and the cartridges. Laser printers smell in my small room. For health safety, not sure if it is better to turn it off.

I know that in the case of inkjet printers, the quality of the paper affects the output. Does the quality of the paper affect the durability of color laser printers? Is it OK to use inexpensive papers from Walmart rather than from HP?
