I have the 24MD4KL-B connected to a MacBook, but it doesn't let me control brightness with the Macbook keyboard (only the Macbook built-in display brightness will change). Am I missing something?

I think you need an app like MonitorControl to be able to do that.
With that app you can setup which keys control brightness on each display or control the brightness with default keys based on which display the mouse cursor is (my favourite).
I have the LG 34WN80C-B UltraWide Monitor 34” and while not an ultra fine, it is compatible. The scaling on the display with my M1 MBP, seems inferior to that of my PC. There's complaints about the M1 Macs with external monitors, but I will say that it works

No need for a third party app with 24MD4KL-B. You should be able to adjust the brightness simply by holding Control and pressing the brightness keys (F1 and F2).
One potential caveat: I've been suffering WindowServer crashes under all of the Ventura Betas, including the last one. These crashes are watchdog triggered and seem more or less random, with or without external devices attached, but they do seem to occur more often after unplugging a M1 laptop from the LG 5K UltraFine display.
I have been looking at this LG UltraFine monitor for use with a M2 (M2 Pro...?) Mac mini, anyone have any experience with it hooked to an Apple silicon computer...?

LG has a number of displays in their Ergo mount lineup, if they would only offer a macOS friendly variant with a 32"/6K landscape & 24"/4.5K portrait on a dual arm Ergo mount for $2K...?
