I think it has a lot to do with where you place it. If it's under your desk the sound is going to radiat out like in an ampitheater. If it's on top of the desk next to you it's going to be right in your face. Mine sits on a shelf to the side of my desk, the face of the computer being parallel with the front of the desk. Most of noise is reflected away from by the side of the desk.

I don't ever find it noisy though except when I shut it down and immediately start it back up. Then the fan runs at high for a second. Normally though I can hear all disk activity over the sound of the fans.

This is on a Dual/GHz/DDR Powermac and yes I do a lot of multitasking and gaming I know what the fans sound like with they step up a notch or two. Even then I don't consider it excessive and can still hear the OEM hard drive.

Maybe Apple fixed the noise on some of the G4's or you just got lucky. I remember that my G3 400 had noise for a while and then I put rubber between the case and the cage. Now there's no noise. However, I'ver heard from a many a G4 owners that the machines are loud. There is a site called g4noise and it's all about the MDD. Obviously people have had issues with noise. That and Apple has been deleting posts regading the noise on there own site. doh!
i got the first shipments we had of the new g4's. this was before the problem was even known. im telling you guys, this computer is silent. my pc is much louder because i built it and it has no fan sensors so slow down the fans when the computer isnt doing anything.

No difference.

I do not notice any difference between my new Dual and Old G4.
Hope that answers you question.
