This is like sticking a Chevy engine in a Ferrari, looks okay but can't perform the same functions.
actaully the engine out of the vette is the lightest engine for the power (in its class)
comming down to HP/lbs (engine block weight) the ferarri may even go faster with a tuned LS7.

lol you guys are trying to defend the lack of Customization in the iPhone?

Sure if you want to be the same as every other iPhone owner, no self identity, no distinctiveness.

That’s like saying, everyone should be driving the exact same car, have the same stereo, have the exact same floor plan and furniture in their house, have the same everything, as everyone else. Eat the same food everyday, wear the same clothes. At the same time losing a substantial amount of money doing it.
If you need to use a wireless phone to express yourself to the world, you're a sad individual.

Nevermind the fact that nobody sees that ZOMG LEET HAX you've made in the first place, unless you're hiding around the corner of an Apple Store and pushing your phone in everyone's face when they walk out with an iPhone.

Sorry if I don’t think the same as everyone else, I think different, and I have personal tastes.
Which are gaudy beyond belief, if that screenshot is actually how you've set up your phone.

LMAO its so good it doesn’t need Customization? That is possible the funniest thing I’ve heard all week, Customization isn’t all about usability, it’s about personal preference.
To you, perhaps. Honestly, I don't care what color my icons are, or if they're arranged by name or function.
Changing the WM and Symbian devices to the iPhone skin actually decreases the functionality of the phone because WM phones have way more applications than the iPhone and the icons cant all fit on the screen, you need to tap the screen more times to open up what you want.
Not so much. Unless you're using one of the horrifyingly bloated and awful-looking Windows Mobile launchers, the core "This is what's on my Home screen" functions of Windows Mobile are much more limited.
WM phones have more functions out of the box, and are more useful as they support more markets than the iPhone. (EX: the iPhone is a horrible business phone and does not target the business market, yet the WM does as well as the same market the iPhone targets)
Do you even understand what you're saying here?

Yes, Windows Mobile devices "do" more out of the box. And if your idea of "more" is writing anything of value in Pocket Word or Pocket Excel, you're an absolute sadist.

Again, the SMART people don’t buy into contracts, they don’t buy locked phones, they buy direct from manufacture for CHEAPER. and they have month to month fees
I'm not sure what fantasyland you're coming from, but GSM carriers absolutely charge more on pay-as-you-go plans, and manufacturers typically charge full MSRP.

Seeing as your only real GSM options in the United States are AT&T and T-Mobile, the only real benefit of an unlocked phone is resale value on eBay. That is, unless you somehow get off on switching back and forth between two carriers.

Mobile Device Center? never used it, I assume its some software to sync with your PDA, PMP, phone etc. ? don’t know what it is, don’t use it because I have a choice in my sync'ing software.
It's the replacement for ActiveSync. Good luck installing your choice on Vista.

im using a beta version of active sync and it hasnt been a buggy like safari or the ipod function on the iPhone. (dont think your iPhone is buggy? just look at all the complaints on THIS forum about the software crashing)
I don't suppose you have some swampland in Florida that you're selling...

also if you dont like active sync, dont use it, there are so many alternatives out there, its only provided with a WM phone becuase MS doesnt include anyone elses software on the disc. (Alternatives? chapaura, intelisync, etc, etc) Sync software >> YOU choose what you want to use, intellisync works well actually since BB’s use it.
For someone who claims to be so value-conscious and smart, why would you spend $50 for some crap syncing software?

No but changing the OS changes the OS, ive installed 3-4 different operating systems on my phone, and I choose the one I like. Now it runs more stable than the ****** official dopod rom I had on, yeah it was actually buggy, but this is true for most official OS's, the hacked versions run much more stable and provide alot more functionality. the WM6 version I have is BlackMajik, it has yet to crash and has WAY more Cooked in apps than any official Rom that has and will ever come out. (Apple forbid I flashed my phone with Custom OS)
Someone doesn't understand what "OS" means. (Hint: you.)

You're not changing the underlying OS. It's still the same crap OS with reghacks and some junk software pre-applied for you. Sites like XDA Developers exist because the product itself is crap, and the companies (with the exception of Palm) do next to nothing to overcome the inherent limitations of Windows Mobile.

I guess that’s why the rest of the mobile phone world (read: me and some internet nerds) calls iPhone users sheep.
Yes, and people called RAZR owners sheep, even after people were making insane SEEM edits and custom ROMs.

And Blackberry? More like Crackberry, am i rite? LOLOLOL!!1!!

I've yet to accuse anyone of being jealous of iPhone owners, but I think your recent posts have been a shining example of someone trying to justify not having one.

I mean, you can't seriously think that anyone is going to say "Oh no! I have wasted hundreds of dollars on a phone I thought I wanted, only to find that true bliss can be found in an HTC Dash with a new ROM, buggy media player, and horrifying launcher! Oh thank you, pr5owner, for showing me the light! I'm going to run to AT&T right now and take this thing back!"

lol wm is more limited? oh ok.. what cant WM do from 2 years ago that the iphone CAN? copy paste? file browser? ringtones? network share mapping? remote desktop? streaming media (youtube included as well)? SEARCH? Bluetooth file transfers? bluetooth SYNC? bluetooth Stereo audio? AVRCP? camera templates? camera SETTINGS? yes i can edit word and excel out of the box, MMS? send to more than 1 recipeint for email, sms, mms, this goes for BCC and Cc contacts as well, i can add as many as a i want, voice dial out of the box, voice digit dial, i can choose what i see for my home screen, i can add or remove icons. i can go on for hours, but i wont, the iphone is completly crippled comapred to other phones in terms of functionality period. (functionalty != looks)

I'm not sure what fantasyland you're coming from, but GSM carriers absolutely charge more on pay-as-you-go plans, and manufacturers typically charge full MSRP.
i know "pay as you go" is the most money to the carrier, only people that cant handle their money or cell phone usage use pay as you go. im talking MONTH TO MONTH. NO CONTRACT, you have the same plan as a contract plan yet you have no obligation to the carrier if you decide to quite right then and there, instead of paying $200+?

for most people that buy cellphones unlocked, they just go get a sim card (they are like $5-$10 online) go to a local store, say, i want this minutes + sms +data plan on this sim, the store will enter your sim ID into their computer, pair it with the plan you want, you then throw the sim into your phone and off you go. (this is what i did, i later changed the plan to a corporate plan when i switch companies, my company offered a discount to its employees)

Seeing as your only real GSM options in the United States are AT&T and T-Mobile, the only real benefit of an unlocked phone is resale value on eBay. That is, unless you somehow get off on switching back and forth between two carriers.
the US is not the only place on earth, please see past your borders. if you travel do you want to pay the rediculous roaming charges ATT imposes? with mine (since its actaully a japanese quad band phone) i can go anywhere in the world and pop in a local prepaid sim for temp use. i can even use their 3.5G networks overseas as i have multiband UMTS

It's the replacement for ActiveSync. Good luck installing your choice on Vista.
dont use vista so i dont know, however i have heard of compatibility problems with 10.4.10, an OS you MUST be using to activate your iphone.
i can activate the iphone with XP if i choose, and ill stick with XP will SP1 of vista.

I don't suppose you have some swampland in Florida that you're selling...
??????

For someone who claims to be so value-conscious and smart, why would you spend $50 for some crap syncing software?
i dont need to spend money on sync software at all, all wm phones do no need some kind of rediculous activation nor does it require a desktop computer out of the box. i dont even need a sim card in the phone out of the box for it to boot up. all pda functions are ready to go, the sim is actaully optional as regular PDA's are dead.

Someone doesn't understand what "OS" means. (Hint: you.)

You're not changing the underlying OS. It's still the same crap OS with reghacks and some junk software pre-applied for you. Sites like XDA Developers exist because the product itself is crap, and the companies (with the exception of Palm) do next to nothing to overcome the inherent limitations of Windows Mobile.
i think you have been using apple products too long as you cant really install anything other than what apple tells you too. my phone never came with WM6 yet i have it on my phone? my phone has never come with linux yet i had a linux OS on my phone.

WM5 != WM6 != hacked WM6 roms != linux

again, changing the look of your current OS is diffrent than changing the OS. with my old OS i can change the look, with my new OS it was already a new look but i can change it to what i want.

with WM6 i have completly new system drivers and files, a new kernel, new radio rom, new everything, its not an interface change

Well golly gee wow. We're not all the rugged individualist that you are. How's it going at building your own vehicle, from the basic parts up, from scratch. Been spending a lot of time in the garden have we? And do let us know when you are done with the loom.

RIIIGHT. More money for the phone (isn't that usually an arguement against the iPhone?) and minutes that expire based on how many you purchase. If you are an international user than I can see the function. If you aren't usually using it outside your local area what's the use?

Oh, and you didn't reply to my point that the networks cripple functions that are basic elements of the phones functional architecture in favor of their own money making functions.

Wait. You had to go through FOUR OS's for your phone before you found one you thought was appropriate? Under those terms ANYONE using the original OS on their phone is a sheep.

Personally this sheep won't miss needing to add hundreds of dollars of hacks and add-ons to make his phone useful. Actually the only thing I miss is my RPN business calculator. But the iPhone is exactly what I had hoped I would get from either my Palm TX and Treo 700p. Anything more is gravy.

The only reason why pr5owner has been posting on this forum for the past month is because he is insecure about his own phone and knows that iPhone does a lot of things better. Sure, it doesn't have ever last feature that some WM phones as, although we cannot yet predict what iPhone will have in the future, but the iPhone despite its lack of all-out customization or superfluous features, is making a lot of people very happy right now with its maps and email and web browsing. His phone is basically a POS that does everything but a part of him hates it nonetheless.

Read -> Comprehend -> Post. Give it a try.

I was talking about the Home screen, though the real comedy here is... so were you.

i know "pay as you go" is the most money to the carrier, only people that cant handle their money or cell phone usage use pay as you go. im talking MONTH TO MONTH. NO CONTRACT, you have the same plan as a contract plan yet you have no obligation to the carrier if you decide to quite right then and there, instead of paying $200+?
Good luck walking in to AT&T and asking them to give you contract rates without a contract.

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make here. I'm pretty sure most people here understand how unlocked phones work.

the US is not the only place on earth, please see past your borders. if you travel do you want to pay the rediculous roaming charges ATT imposes? with mine (since its actaully a japanese quad band phone) i can go anywhere in the world and pop in a local prepaid sim for temp use. i can even use their 3.5G networks overseas as i have multiband UMTS
It is, however, the only place the iPhone works properly for the time being.

Since you clearly didn't get the point (again), let me spell it out for you: most people are not world travelers. "Phone geeks who travel the world and do not need to have a consistent phone number" isn't a very large market segment that companies cater to.

dont use vista so i dont know, however i have heard of compatibility problems with 10.4.10, an OS you MUST be using to activate your iphone.
i can activate the iphone with XP if i choose, and ill stick with XP will SP1 of vista.
What "compatibility problems" have you heard of? And popping off about activating your phone with XP nullifies your own argument.

i dont need to spend money on sync software at all, all wm phones do no need some kind of rediculous activation nor does it require a desktop computer out of the box. i dont even need a sim card in the phone out of the box for it to boot up. all pda functions are ready to go, the sim is actaully optional as regular PDA's are dead.
The software you mentioned are all licensed products that are supposed to be paid for.

Please tell us, in your infinite wisdom, how one would go about making all of the wonderful customizations you keep going on about, if they don't have a computer? Or are you admitting that people who get a Windows Mobile device are pretty much stuck with junk unless they have one? (Remember... you said that the stock ROM on your phone was "buggy")

i think you have been using apple products too long as you cant really install anything other than what apple tells you too. my phone never came with WM6 yet i have it on my phone? my phone has never come with linux yet i had a linux OS on my phone.

You might want to read about WM6 on your ultracool phone, instead of posting jealous rants. It isn't nearly as new as you think it is.

Look at the United States. That should answer your question rather quickly.
i know, americans need to be educated a little more than they are now (actaully alot more)

1/5 americans think the sun still revolves around the earth. americans need to know there are OTHER countries outside of their own that have more advanced technology.

Australia later this year will implement HSUPA as the standard. where is the iphone?

EDGE (2.75G) > UMTS (3G) > HSDPA (3.5G) > HSUPA (3.75G)

3 generations behind. and you people are saying edge is fast? on ATT? LOL HSDPA is comparable to DSL speeds, and exceeds it in somecases especially over seas. 3.6mbit HSDPA vs Telus DSL 1.5mbit in canada.

What the hell has education got to do with anything? Sure it sucks that 3G take up in the USA is *****, but that's got nothing to do with Americans being stupid or not understanding the technology, and everything to do with the cell phone companies slowness at taking up the technology (probably because they have a lot more towers to manage than Australia, a place with 1/15th of the population of the USA).

I have a 3G phone right now so am right up to date in terms of technology available in the USA, and guess what? The best I can get where I live is EDGE. Same on Verizon, I have an EVDO card for my laptop, but the best I get where I live is CDMA2000 1xRTT, despite 3 years ago the Verizon rep promising me that I'd get EVDO "real soon".

I love Australia but the population of australia is about 20 million. The New York metropolitan area is just under 19 million.

Be careful when you make generalizations, because America is so diverse and so large in so many ways that you can pretty much make any sort of generalization you like...and be wrong about 90% of the country.

thats not Customizing a vehicle, thats building one. i prefer my own stereo, my choice of speakers, subs, etc, i prefer my own pref of rubber (dunlop sport 5000m blows, i would much rather have BFG traction TA)

If all the apps you want to access are on the single page why do you need to customize their position?
no i have 4 pages of apps on my phone, but the most common ones i use are on my today screen, but i do use all of them in a month. i uninstalled the ones i dont use often.

RIIIGHT. More money for the phone (isn't that usually an arguement against the iPhone?) and minutes that expire based on how many you purchase. If you are an international user than I can see the function. If you aren't usually using it outside your local area what's the use?

Oh, and you didn't reply to my point that the networks cripple functions that are basic elements of the phones functional architecture in favor of their own money making functions.
yeah i did, dont buy a locked phone from a provider, thats just dumb. you are asking to get ripped off if you buy a phone from VZW,

Wait. You had to go through FOUR OS's for your phone before you found one you thought was appropriate?
all 4 worked, its just the one i have now was closer to how i would Customize it, also i liked the theme on it better, i can change the theme, but it already had it installed. (comes with a registry editor too)

Personally this sheep won't miss needing to add hundreds of dollars of hacks and add-ons to make his phone useful.
my total cost on the phone for software is $0, wm6 was free (even officially free from HTC Asia as well as ATT), most of the best 3rd party apps are free like convert CE (unit conversion), Audio manager (plays mp3s but with a nice interface and better integration), Voice command (dont need to prerecord voices, you just speak and it does voice recognition like dragon, working flawless so far even in a windy or noisy environment through my bluetooth headset)

@scootermafia if your going to troll, dont post, we are comparing features of our phones. saying 1 phone is a POS without proving it is trolling

Read -> Comprehend -> Post. Give it a try.

I was talking about the Home screen, though the real comedy here is... so were you.
please elaborate, how is the iphone MORE capable in terms of the home screen than blackberries, WM6 phones as regular phones ("dumb phones")?

Good luck walking in to AT&T and asking them to give you contract rates without a contract.
the point of an unlocked phone is to not use ATT because they are horrible (i havent used ATT, this is comming from people that have the iphone and have to use ATT because apple said so)

im on rogers personally, they let me pick whatever plan i wanted, i can even change it online at anytime. the only thing i cannot do that i could with a 2yr or 3yr contract is free inbound calls from the same provider. most people that call me are not on rogers so it wouldnt make a diffrence.

most people are not world travelers
but people travel, so are you saying they are screwed? apple doesnt care? actaully i dont think apple does care about your finacial situation.

What "compatibility problems" have you heard of? And popping off about activating your phone with XP nullifies your own argument.
google 10.4.10 compatiblity issues, most of the link point back to macrumors.
also it costs over $120USd to upgrade to 10.4.10, why should you upgrade your OS to use a phone? no other phone has EVER required you to do this.

how one would go about making all of the wonderful customizations you keep going on about, if they don't have a computer?
WM phones have full HTML browsers as well as a full fledge file browser and file system. you can actaully DOWNLOAD a WM6 ROm image and flash it from your storage card, dont even need a computer. i installed skype without a computer by simply downloading the cab file and tapping the icon in file browser on my PDA. WM2K3/5/6 have had their own app installers.

(yes you can upgrade your OS without a computer and its reliable thanks to HARDSPL)

WM6 = WM5 SP1. Hacked WM6 ROMs = WM6.
thats like saying 10.4 is OS 9 SP1.

10.4 has new drivers, new look, new themes, new interface, new system files, and possibly even new sounds. its a diffrent OS.

It isn't nearly as new as you think it is
no its 1.5 years old, my HTC prophet is 2.5 years old, WM6 isnt new, the HTC touch had it last month. the iphone brings nothing new to the table, visual voice mail is avalible on any BB/S60/WM phone as long as the provider supports it,
the iphone is new however

Yeah, but by your own admission you aren't running WM6. So what you have is a uber-geeked out phone. Most of us want a phone that works well and is easily understood out of the box. Having gone through several Palm PDAs I chose to buy a Treo 700p so I won't make claims about WM. But Garnet is nearly useless as an OS without a lot of time spent with the manual.

{snip}

the point of an unlocked phone is to not use ATT because they are horrible (i havent used ATT, this is comming from people that have the iphone and have to use ATT because apple said so)
The point is that AT&T and T-Mobile are the only effective GSM networks in the US.

im on rogers personally, they let me pick whatever plan i wanted, i can even change it online at anytime. the only thing i cannot do that i could with a 2yr or 3yr contract is free inbound calls from the same provider. most people that call me are not on rogers so it wouldnt make a diffrence.
Well since we're comparing apples and oranges AT&T works much better where I am than Verizon, Sprint or T-Mobile. But it is essentially unfair to compare US and non-US coverage packages. Come back when the terms for your area are released and then complain.

but people travel, so are you saying they are screwed? apple doesnt care? actaully i dont think apple does care about your finacial situation.
Be honest. AT&T doesn't care.

google 10.4.10 compatiblity issues, most of the link point back to macrumors.
also it costs over $120USd to upgrade to 10.4.10, why should you upgrade your OS to use a phone? no other phone has EVER required you to do this.
Yes, I was quite upset when I had to pay $120 to upgrade my father's laptop from 10.4.8 to 10.4.10.

I would hesitate to call those who failed to check the system requirements (which you pratcically had to work at not learning) your allies.

{snip}

Frankly your whole "We did it first/better" is rather like reading a bad press release from Apple circa 1995. Having gone through several PDA's and smartphones I am happy to say that the iPhone is what I wanted each time I bought a new device. Sure there are things that are less than great about it, but I knew about them when I bought my phone and I haven't missed them.

Edge is slow? So what? Those that I know who have WM phones say that they are slow to, even on EVDO. I HAVE a treo on EVDO and it still can't load the internet as fast as my iphone, and believe me I checked.

You seem to think that you have the perfect phone, and if you didn't after all the work you've done to get to that point I would feel sorry for you. But not everyone has the time or the patience to try all sorts of different systems and hacks. So you take your perfect phone and have fun trying to find the 1/5 of americans who think your country is of any importance. I'll take my un-modded iPhone and get some real work done.

I think the point you're missing is that the iPhone is designed so well, it doesn't need customization.
There's a couple dozen changes it does need and I'm glad folks are hacking them. In fact, I'll join them if Apple doesn't issue an update by August.

You really don't get it do you?

When you go out to a fine restaurant do you tell the chef what ingredients to use? How to combine them? How long to cook them and how to arrange the final creations on the plate?

Maybe you would.

There are those of us who actually like it just the way it is. It's not a sign of mass delusion of manipulation or naivety to love the interface and layout and features just the way they are.

I personally think it's on par with a work of art. And I'm sure others feel the same way.

If that's not good enough for you fine, but one day you may learn to understand that sitting back and enjoying a nice meal prepared by an artist is preferable to acting on every last id-generated drive your mind can express.
Yep. I request the hot spices, and when it arrives at the table, I'm more often than not adding pepper. Cooks (or even chefs) can't prepare a dish to everyone's liking. That's why there's ketchup, tobasco, salt & sugar. Duh.

Yep. I request the hot spices, and when it arrives at the table, I'm more often than not adding pepper. Cooks (or even chefs) can't prepare a dish to everyone's liking. That's why there's ketchup, tobasco, salt & sugar. Duh.
Try going to an eatery without ketchup in the pantry.

Actually, I do what smart people do:

I outsource those choices to companies whose products reflect what I know I like.

I make my choice when evaluating the product. That allows me to focus my energies on other things like actually using the iPhone.
I agree. If you have no life (and no money), then by all means get the cheap inferior product and spend your time making it look like what you really want.
Or one can use a great product as designed while you do more important things with your time.

By the way, some people like ketchup, tobasco, salt and sugar on everything while they use Blackberrys, Treos, Razrs and regular gas. They're called Microsoft customers.

i really only spent around an hour playing with how i wanted it to look, how long did you spend on your iphone when you got it out of the box?
anyways http://www.macworld.com/news/2007/07/18/pcwiphone/index.php
also elaborate on how my phone is inferior, what short comings does my phone have?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3-MbVvtI6k (you can change the skin of the 8525/TyTN/x01HT cingular put a horrible skin on the phone, with the softbank skin you can have black or white)

Yes, I was quite upset when I had to pay $120 to upgrade my father's laptop from 10.4.8 to 10.4.10.
i seriously hope you mean 10.3.8 > 10.4.10 because anything .4 upgrades is free however, according to most statistics out of all mac users, around 25% are still running a 10.3 implementation.

Most of us want a phone that works well and is easily understood out of the box
mine is easily understood out of the box, the girl at petsmart asked what kind of a phone i had since it rung when i was at the till, i let her look at it after the call and she figured out how to play videos, look at the weather, play mp3s and take pictures right away. WM6 is easy to use, the icons are self explanitory.

also my phone manual was in japanese so i couldnt read it lol, i just figured everything out, if i dont know how to do something, the phone has HELP and a Tutorial. havent used those and they were on the WM5 image, WM6 actaully removed it to save room.

@dr_lha americans dont embrace change, they dont have the will power to learn new things, they like status quo. other countries are the complete opposite, just look at japan, before WW1 they were pretty much stone age, during WWII they improved but their technology was still crap, and now they are one of the most advanced, they look forward to working (vs looking forward to the weekend) they look forward to new technolgy (vs taking it slow)

Down on Copperline...
1. Someone seriously needs to get their sarcasm meter re-calibrated.
2. The below is laughable

For those who are clueless, e.g. (that's an abbreviation for "such as." just trying to make sure you understand) the OP the US remains one of the most productive industrialized nations, with one of the longest work weeks and one with the lowest number of paid vacation days. To bad the same cannot be said for the non-asian industrialized countries

And congrats to the bigoted blowhard pr5owner on being able to field strip a phone faster than anyone else. I'm sure that on some level that matters.

I'm done.

Folks ...

pr5owner is an endless black hole of iPhone envy/hatred, that will never ever stop talking ... he's been at it forever over on Howard Forums and eventually got himself banned (example message here - http://www.howardforums.com/showpost.php?p=9458323&postcount=26 - note the "Banned" tag), so obviously feels a continued need to vent elsewhere and is coming over to MacRumors to do so ...

Best to just ignore him, although I doubt he'll actually go away.

i guess all these people that bought the iphone dont see it the same way you do, why are they modding it at all if the interface is so great?
Well, there are people who are scared of changing things or looking different. There are people who just don't see any reason to change things. But yes, I think a lot of people DO like to personalize their homes, cars, phones, clothes.

All of which is just a blah-blah lead-in to one of my favorite set of icons so far. (I think the Tardis is cool):

Although there are plenty more that are as good or better. Amazing number of icon artists out there.

Why Apple doesn't provide for, and advertise, the ability to customize, is just way beyond me. Either they're control freaks, or really egotistical about their own stuff. :p

Doesn insulting other countries and making vast generalizations about the people that live in those countries make you feel better about yourself? Does being a bigot make up for your lack of maturity and things to do in your life? I mean hey if making bigoted generalizations about other countries which you obviously know nothing about makes you sleep better at night and makes you happy, then keep it up.

So there you go guys, pr5owner, who is probably at home right now trying to find that perfect icon for his uber customizable phone's calculator program, is now at peace with himself because he was able to make up for his lack of a life by using ignorant stereotypes and bigotry directed towards other countries to make the simple point that he doesn't like the iPhone.

Now let me answer the phone because I'm at work since I'm actually a productive member of society ;)
