I know that all post pay iPhones on O2 are locked but do they also lock the pre-pay ones? Seeing as they do not subsidise the pre-pay handsets they probably should not lock them either??

Yes they are. You can officially unlock pre-pay iPhones from O2 for a £15 charge but if you unlock within the first 12 months they cancel your WiFi bolt on. See below

    "Pay & Go customers
Yes, you can unlock your iPhone for a one-off cost of £15. You'll pay for this from the money topped-up on your phone.

But if you unlock your iPhone less than 12 months after you bought it, we'll take off the free Web & Wi-Fi Bolt On (that we added for the first 12 months). You can buy a Web & Wi-Fi Bolt On for £10 a month when you fill in the unlocking form."

From what I have read, if O2 (or any operator) agreed to unlock your iPhone for you, they would do so through an updated carrier (ipcc) file - is this correct?

    This is not correct.
My o2 phone is unlocked and I didn't receive a carrier update to do it.

If you shift to a monthly rolling simplicity plan then you can get it unlocked.

If you already had/have a contract with say a 3G, and updated to buy a PAYG iPhone, you could get the new handset PAYG unlocked i'd imagine.

is o2 the only network with the iphone in ireland?
    here's from the website
"Your mobile phone is restricted to use on the O2 Ireland network. If you terminate your Pre-Pay service with us, or do not remain on one of our dedicated tariffs for iPhone, only the ipod function on your mobile phone will work. If you attempt to unlock your mobile phone and use on another network, it may become permanently unusable. This amends section 9.2 of the O2 Speakeasy terms."

this is exactly as it was in the UK on o2 but when the other networks gained the iphone o2 started unlocking them

At the moment, 02 are the only ones that have the iPhone...Irish unlock policies are very annoying at the best of times, plus they are seperate companies and may not follow suit.

I've done a lot more research and I may have found a better solution to my problem,

    Thanks!
