The thing that's odd for me in iDVD, iPhoto or Disk Util...I can only choose 1x or 2x in the speed pull down. I wrote a 2 GB iphoto back up lat week...it took at least 20 minutes!!

Do you know if the patch is still floating around? I wouldn't mind cutting my burn times in half ^_~

I've no idea what it was but you could try Patchburn.de. Beware though - don't blame me if you melt your 'book. ;)

Baldani: slightly OT, but trying to encode and burn 4GB in iDVD on a Powerbook will leave you wanting for more power. I did it a few times and unless you get into the habit of doing it before you go to bed, it can seem like it takes an age!

The older desktop S.Drives are definitely faster than their Powerbook siblings, despite both being sold as 8x (16x DL's in the PM Desktops now though).

Wish I understood how PatchBurn worked ... I don't know whether I should unlock +R or RAM burning functionality ... or if the setting for max speed of 0 is what I want, or if that would even affect the 1x burning speed =/

The 835 drive should already be able to use +R? Anyone help on the Max speed of 0 bit?

I have the 815 drive ^^;

Ah yeah. I forgot you said earlier, Rev A PB. Sorry. :eek:

Um, I'd enable everything then. If you blow it, a new one isn't too much. :eek:

A new Superdrive is $300 (I can replace it myself) x_x BUT

I could get the new 8x Superdrive for the same amount :cool:

Anyway I found a firmware flash but I'm leary of people saying they're superdrives going down after 2 years of use ... wonder if it's the drive getting old of the firmware. I get the same hardware errors from time to time even with this superdrive, unadjusted.

Don't want to speed up the process too much ... but cutting a DVD burning time from 1 hour to 30 minutes is very tempting ^^

Edit: Lesson 1 - read something properly... I've just re-read the letter and it seems the problematic drives are actually Matshita 835 models which were dropped in May for the the 845 version. So this PB has the newer drive but it's still slower compared to the pioneer one at work.

I have a powerbook 12" (1.5GHz) with a Matsashita UJ-835E. How do I actually measure the burn speed? (when I try to burn an image, 8x is offered, but that does not necessarily mean that the drive burns at 8x speed).
I was already a bit pissed when I bought my Powerbook that I had to pay 200 bucks for a DVD burner (you can buy excellent external drives for half the price). My Canon Powershot G3 doesn't work stable with my Powerbook (now and then images are skipped), and I have problems with my HP Deskjet 5652 printer cutting of 1cm at the bottom of pages. I'm starting to wish that I had bought a Windows notebook.. would have been cheaper and I wouldn't have had all these problems (I know - they don't occur when I'm using the peripherals with the WinXP notebook of my girlfriend). Now, if the DVD drive is crippled, too.. Lenovo, I'm coming!

sorry to ressurrect a semi-old thread...but did anyone determine a good type of media to use with the uj-835e so that it will indeed burn at 8x? any word from apple that they are going to fix this?

Imation 8x DVD-R discs burn at 8x for me. They also seem to be far more reliable than any other writeable media I've used - I don't have any Imation Coasters™ yet :D

From what I've read, Apple are reluctant to publicly admit that there are any problems with the UJ-835E :rolleyes:
