I've seen all the rumors about the upcoming iPhones for 2019 in just a few weeks and it sounds like they will be mild updates to the current phones with no major changes to the form factors.

Im curious, based on the last few iphone releases, my impression is that what the rumors predict are usually pretty true. Is that correct? What was shown was what was rumored ahead of time?

My impression is that there usually aren't surprises anymore at apple events? I remember back say 10 years ago, apple events were a big deal because there was always some surprise in store

What I'm secretly hoping for is that the rumored 5.4" iphone rumored for 2020, would actually come out in 2019. Wondering if this is a 1% chance kinda thing, or if apple still sometimes pulls out surprises.

I don’t know that I would call the ‘triple lens camera’ a mild update, sounds pretty substantial in terms of what it might offer. On top of that, there was no rumored physical changes to the form factor with the iPhone this year. I mean, traditionally the iPhone doesn’t change its ‘form factor’ on an annual basis, generally all smart phones really are the same, except they make changes with the Camera orientation/display, things of that nature.

But a 5.4 iPhone almost seems guaranteed. Apple needs to expand its market segment here for those who want a smaller device. It’s seems they will be doing just that.

At this point there are usually no more surprises.

Well form factor change was more often in the early years.
It went up from 1 year to 2 years with the iphone 3, 4, 5. And than 4 years with the ip6.
Hopefully with the x they only do 3 years...

I was just going to post this. I totally agree with you. The 3GS to the 4 is a substantial upgrade, IMO. 7 to X comes in second place. 6 to 6s follows closely behind the 7 to X. Since then, nothing too exciting. Not even the Xs Max or Xʀ. Otherwise I would’ve upgraded. I used to upgrade every single year. That stopped with the X.

The 4/4s is my favorite design Apple has ever released. The glass back was a nice touch but too sensitive.

Of course not. The 5.4 iPhone will have 5G. It wouldn’t make sense otherwise for 2019 given the transition.
A 5.4" phone, being iphone or android will not have 5G in the near future as the antennas are too big and power-hungry right now.

That's why the "5G" versions of the S10, note and mate are even bigger than the normal or even "pluses" size.

For the 2019 iPhones, my suspicions are that the rumors are 100% accurate: It'll be a dud. If not actually a "dud", very underwhelming

The iPhone supply chain is way too long and big to pull any kind of surprises.

If the info comes from Ming-Chi Kuo or Mark Gurman, you can bet it's 99% correct. These two are the gold standard in the rumor community.
