Are the current MacPro completely silent?

Hello, considering to buy a 3.33GHz 6-core MacPro or a 3.06GHz 12-core one.
Are these systems completely silent?

Are those video cards (ATI Radeon HD 5770, two ATI HD 5770 and ATI HD 5870) completely silent as well?

of course not, there are several fans and they will rev up under load. It's relatively quite, but definately not "completely silent".

Hi Cindori, I remember you. You were very famous on making a Hackintosh. I am considering to buy a MacPro or a HP Z820. How easy it is to turn the Z820 into a Hackintosh?

Also depends on where it is relevant to you as well as in comparison to your surround noises. Sitting under desk it's definitely quieter than any ambient sound in my house. Certainly can't hear it over the sound of the exhaust fan in the attic. If you were in a sound isolated studio, you might be able to hear it more. For all purposes though, to me, it's dead silent. Only hear the fans kick in when starting it up.

I have a new 3.06 12 core and render in Lightwave sometimes 24 hours a day, and can barely hear my machine under full load. Just a slight whisper. It's every bit as quite as my 2008 8 core.

I have a single socket 3.33GHz 6 core unit loaded with hard drives and using the 5770 card.

I literally have to get down on the floor and nearly press my ear to the machine to hear anything, even under load.

I don't hear my machine unless I am rendering, and then its still VERY quiet. It'll render stuff in Maya or After Effects for long periods of time.

I hear mine sometimes when running CPU at 100% (or is it 1200%?) and room temps were high (over 90ºF). That's what happens when I don't turn on the air conditioning!

I have a single quad 2,8 GHZ Mac Pro 5.1 with a Radeon 5770 standing right on my desk. I would not call it dead silent, but the noise is very low and has a characteristic which does not disturb a lot.

All Apple notebooks have quite an annoying high pitch if their fans rev up to keep the temperatures within range. The Mac Pro never leaves the sound range of a low humming noise.


Keep in mind, that HDD contribute to the noise level as well. Within my Mac Pro are four HDD and I notice their sounds much more than the fans of the Mac Pro or the Radeon.

I have mp 5,1 and it's very quite - only noticeable at night if trying o sleep, and even then it's easy to forget its on.

If rendering in fcp, motion, other encoding jobs on a Mbp, it would sound like a small hair dryer going off, if done on my mp, sounds like a, well just sounds the same as when left in standby(so very quite) which is great!

From my very cursory glance at the Hackintosh scene, most build a PC especially for the Hackintosh project with a set range of hardware, rather than try and hack another PC to run OS X. Pros could of course just get it there and do it themselves, but for most, DIY is the go.
