im not looking to take it into the shower or anything. Just wondering if they are ip67 certified in case I ever spill a glass of water on it or something.

I'd say no, they're not sealed and to my knowledge apple has not mentioned any sort of thing related to water resistance with the iPad.

Seems odd they aren’t. Why wouldn’t Apple include this if it means more protection?

Waiting for a slow update year? Difficulties in attaching a large screen securely enough for waterproofing but still able to open for repairs? Speakers too powerful for waterproof mesh? Not enough demand? Metal case expands too much from the heat and curves/breaks the screen?

Perhaps they feel their tablet performance has a strong lead over the competition. Or they used waterproof mesh over the openings anyway and are testing the waterproofing in the wild before committing (like the iPhone 6s had improved screen seals and mesh but only the 7 had a water resistant rating).

Why bother? They probably can survive a simple spill, but water resistance is designed to protect again full submersion. People are far less likely to drop an iPad in the toilet or a pool than a phone. I don’t know of any tablet designed for that.
