Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that my early '08 died of a "logic board failure." They said that it didn't pass their tests far enough to confirm that it was nVIDIA's fault, and flat-out refused me a fix for less than £450ish. But I'll be screwed sideways if it wasn't all the signs & symptoms of GPU failure and they were just being stubborn. I mean, an early '08 model--what are the odds that it's logic board and NOT GPU? Plus, either way both are going to get replaced, it's just a matter of whether a uni student or a giant electronics firm pays for it! I babied that computer like nobody's business and it got me nowhere. Not going to be quite so anal about my new one.

Heading back for a short holiday home (the States) and will be taking it to my local Apple Store where I know the nice people and I know that they will do everything in their power to prove it's a GPU failure, and if not, they'll give me a flat-rate cost of repair. Although I am mightily happy with my 2011 13" :D

Anyway, long story short--yeah, avoid it. And even though they'll fix that failure within four years of purchase...you're coming up on that anyway.

4) And for 800 bucks am I better off with something else?

Thanks a lot!

Definitely. Another hundred dollars or so gets you a refurb 13". $400 more puts you in range for the cheaper refurb 15's. Both of these will come with a year warranty and eligibility for Applecare. This thing...not so much, unless the seller works out something with you. Keep in mind that one major repair on this thing + the initial cost will easily add up to the cost of a refurb.

I had a 2.6ghz 8600gt 512mb (early 08) that failed out of applecare and apple told me there was nothing they would do.

Well Apple did say that they would support it for 4 years so dunno what's going on there but I know how you feel, haven't had the best service from them either.

Yeah I mean I wasn't expecting a new computer, as I did buy it used, but disappointed for apple's standards as I tend to hear good things on these boards.

I don't know about used prices where you're located, but I personally wouldn't spend more than $650 on 2008 MBP.
