I have an older imac i7 2.8 that I just added the new i7 retina with 32gb of ram and upgraded video card. after a month of ownership it's just not feeling like it was the right decision considering the price paid. I upgraded my older one to an ssd and kept stock drive for time machine backup and pictures. in benchmarks the new one is 2x as fast in real world minus the amazing screen I just don't see much difference.

I also have a 2009 I7 iMac and I changed my mind on buying the new Retina iMac. My 5 year old iMac is still fast enough, even for video editing.

In 2004 we had slow G5's with 20" screens. The 2009 27" iMacs were dramatically better. But 5 years later, in 2014, I just don't see as much of a difference.

Newbies as in the MR rankings.

And last I checked, you're a 6502, while I'm a 68040. Learn to respect those who've helped around more instead of being one of those who just reads and then doesn't comment/help. Have a look at my posting history if you want.

So you also need some math of your own.

Seriously? You are actually defending a minuscule three years by pointing frantically at the number of postings you've made? You've got to be kidding.:rolleyes::eek:

In my book 2004 > 2011 no matter how you slice it, dice it, or thrice it... respect your elders and let's move on...

Seriously, you'd resurrect this old thread? "If you are a MacRumors newbie, chances are I will disregard your post." is not even in his sig anymore, and I do agree he was smart to remove it as it was a stupid statement.

BTW, rankings are dedication, rather than when you just happened to join :p

I had a 2009 iMac that crapped out so I was forced to decide this very thing last fall. I decided to go for the Retina screen because I could afford it and I thought it was simply amazing, which it absolutely is! I have no legitimate need for it, just do a little light photo editing and other typical stuff (actually mostly spreadsheets), but it's just a joy to look at. I also went for the i7, which is probably overkill for what I do, but I wanted to go for the high end based on the assumption that I would also have this computer for 5+ years. I went with the 3GB fusion drive and it's a really noticeable improvement over the old 640GB drive in my 2009 - the computer starts up within 10 or 15 seconds. I just went with the 8GB of RAM and bought an extra 16GB from Amazon for $150, so now I have 24GB. All in all, I don't think I'd recommend going for the i7 and Retina screen if you feel it's stretching your budget, but I'm sure happy I did!

**** respecting elders, more posts means more help contributed. I couldn't give a rat's arse on how long have you been here, but if you've helped less (which almost always equals to posting less) you're just a dick who only sucks off help and not give back in return.

Nice thread resurrection by the way.

Very nice, I'm sure that machine will last you a long time doing those tasks.
