Are there ANY reliable external HDDs??

Heat is a hard drive's biggest enemy. I keep mine turned off and unplugged unless I'm using it. My laCie is 2.5 years old and no problems whatsoever.

that has to be a joke... my fantom broke in about a month. currently I own a WD and will soon buy another WD. The one I have now is great

Ditto on the heat thing though.... my maxtor 100GB external with a generic enclosure is still working (although the soud the unit makes is comparable to a jet engine)
