I mean if you already bought the phone then you can’t retroactively do anything. Especially buying sim free from Apple
Doesn't matter that it was bought totally sim free with no carrier in mind so to speak?

No. As long as the phone you want to trade is on the eligible list, you are good to go.

No idea what he is talking about. If you've already purchased the sim free phone from Apple, there is nothing you can do to lower the price. You can trade in with Apple, but you need to go through that when purchasing the phone. Carriers have nothing to do with buying sim free phone from Apple.
Just cancel your order and order again with the trade in, will make it much easier.
