they are known to crack - its terribly annoying!!

i really do not believe that the MBPs will get an i5 CPU - its far too small IMO. we will see!

I'm excited to see. The 15" is a big clunky for my needs, so it'll either be the 13" MBP or the rumored 11.6" Air. Then I can stop staring at these cracks on my laptop haha

ive had my 15" for 5 years - i dont really find it clunky at all. i take it to uni and used to take it to school. personal preference though of course!

i really am considering the 11" MBA! it will be AWSOME!

my MacBook pro idles at 180F when doing nothing. it will be 5 years old in a week or two. there is absolutely no need to worry about your laptop temperature wise - as you are not anywhere near TjMax temps (hardware shut off values). im not hounding you for using it, go ahead, its great for keeping it and yourself cool. i just dont see the computer benefiting that much even in the long run.

180F!? at idle?? now you my friend have an issue. your thermal paste must be dried out. i would highly recommend you check it out. macbooks shut off at 210F i believe. but anything above 170F for a long period of time cant be good for the cpu and it will def dry out your thermal paste fast.

Yeah, 180 at idle is certainly a problem. My MBP usually idles at 90-100 during normal browsing. When using the built in iSight with Skype the other day I noticed it bumped up to 120 with increased CPU usage for the video. I did notice once while rendering audio in Garageband that the CPU hit 209 for a few seconds; sounds like it was at the shutoff threshold almost!

I use Safari 99% of the time and sometimes Firefox. I use ClicktoFlash too and that helps cut out all the Flash garbage and thus reduces CPU cycles, not to mention annoying Flash ads!

yeah 209 is very close to the shut off, and very close to doing damage if it stayed that temp for long enough. luckily for your case nothing happened.

but yeah depending on how hot it is in my room, my macbook is anywhere from 90-115F while browsing/music/aim/etc. it can get up to 130F while watching consecutive videos. and i havent really seen it get higher than 140F even when i produce music it stays at 120F. Reason 5 is actually pretty resource affective.

but yeah this guy with idle temps at 180 LOL. bye bye macbook. i mean i know the older pros do get hot as hell, but damn thats outrageous. as i stated earlier, i would re apply thermal paste. after about 3 years your thermal paste starts to dry out, making it less conductive, meaning less heat can pass through it, meaning your heat sink wont be getting as much heat transferred from the cpu in order to cool it. if you cant reapply the thermal paste yourself, i recommend you find someone and have them do it. its's fairly easy and cheap.

i personally do it to my ps3 and computers every 3 years.

im not really worried, but thanks for the concern - im well aware of CPU WRT heat ;) there are a number of reasons why i am not worried.
1. its a Core Duo laptop - those CPUs are mighty hot.
2. the fans run at 1000rpm by default on this machine, when i push up to 2000rpm it drops significantly.
3. laptop was original design for the Core Duo Intel chips, its a MBP 1,1. cant expect them to get something right
4. i want a new laptop.

:)

i will eventually replace the termal paste, it doesnt really bother me that much though. 80c (180F) isnt a problem in my eyes.

revvd fans up to 1500rpm and now at 70°C. :D

for **** sake rev your fans up to 3-4k...70C + long term will do damage and durastically reduce the life of your cpu as well as your thermal paste. would you rather replace a 10 dollar fan or an entire cpu? i really cant even believe how you think 80C is not a problem at idle!? and my macbook at idle the fans are at 1995, they dont go lower than that. i would never even let my macbook run at 80C LOL. id run my fans at 6k long before i did that.

but idk man to each his own, but im sure most people would agree with me. if you wanna slowly but surely fry your macbook by all means do so. or if you were smart youd do something about your heat issue, reapply the thermal paste and then either keep your macbook or sell it..

you cannot honestly believe that you are right? you have absolutely NO idea how wrong you could be, i seriously dont know how you could be so rude when you base your opinions on, well, opinions and not facts.

if you knew CPUs and heat management you would know that TjMax specifies the max hardware lockout temperature which is specified by the chipmaker (i.e. Intel). it is TjMax that is the temperature when power/heat/performance loss become too much for the chip overall and it is this temperature that will start damaging your computer. anything below that and you have perfectly fine. seeing as though i am ~30*C below this temperature, i think i am sweet.

also important to mention is the fact that the machine is now 5 years old (in a few weeks) - if there was any heat damage to the machine i think it would happen before then ;)

Woah. This discussion is getting heated, no pun intended

See, this is what kinda boggled me when you were criticized over letting your MBP run that hot. I had to go back and double check, it's a first gen MBP, and I'm assuming it's not had a logicboard replacement? Five years is a great run for a laptop, no matter how warm it gets.

OT, my 2009 MBP idles at about 135°F with fans at ~2000RPM. I've hit 200+ when messing with HandBrake.

wonderful run. going to have it for another 5 years i feel. the only thing that bothers me is the battery life! (2hrs, 3hrs off a new battery). it has not had a logic board replacement. i do not think there is a fault with it, and from previous knowledge of Apple - they WILL NOT replace the machine/logic board for temperature issues unless it is creeping close to TjMax.

yes it can get quite high. mates macbook (core duo) hit 115*C once - the fan was broken and didnt realise :D it still works to this day :)

for the record - a friends 17" core 2 duo (from around the same time) idles at 67*C with fans revving very high :p

its not an opinion that 80C will slowly but surely reduce the life of your cpu. for one thermal paste will dry out faster than normal causing even more heat. and long periods of heat at about 80C does reduce a cpus life. look it up if u dont believe me.

but all im saying is why would u run your cpu so hot and have your fans running so low. atleast put your fans up to 3.5k or something...

i dont see why you think thermal paste becoming dry = dead CPU. they are separate entities. i dont care if the thermal paste becomes dry, ill simply reapply it. it doesnt mean that the CPU will die. like i said before, 5 years on now and still going strong.

;) just cuz i can :D apple and Intel put billions of dollars into their R&D especially for my computer. the end result is that i do not have to worry about my computer!

k lol...now im going to replace my evo 8 intercooler that cools my t3/t4 57trim turbo on my srt4 with a tiny one like thats on a stock 1.8t jetta just because it wont blow up right away...smart.

kind of amazing that thing is still kicking

i honestly dont know how else i can say it... the heat isnt effecting and performance nor any longevity of the machine.

ah well - whatever. doesnt matter.
